Spotting, SFO

Tue Feb 06, 2001 12:20 pm

Okay, thought i would get an early start on this one... I'll be flying to HNL in little less than a month, but i'm going to overnight in SFO, it appears from the layout (and those side-by-side approaches) of the airport that it would be a Great spotting airport...

Since im only going to be there for 6-10 hours, and no car, does anyone know of any places i can go? taking into consideration im young and vibrant and dont mind walking far... also i can usually mooch rides most anywhere from parking lot shuttle drivers....

Thanks in advance...

Fellow member flygga has a great site on spotting in the Bay Area/SFO.

After you check out my site, let me know if you have any specific questions. I am in the process of updating the SFO page now that the new international terminal is open.

The above URL does not seem to be working this morning for some reason. You can also use to access my site directly.

I reccomend the area around A5 & A7, you can look right to the planes taxiing to 1L/1R and the beginning of their takeoff roll... also the top level of the A Garage is very good for taking pictures of the planes that are on the freeway side of the A Concourse.

Not much to speak of in G really, except you can see all the United planes along the F Concourse...

Head in the clouds... yet feet planted firmly on the ground.

Kai and I are starting the Bay Area Spotter's Association, and have bought a domain name. There is a prototype of the site in my userprofile.

Anyway, when the sight is completed we will have Hot tips for the spotter!

I would also recomend gates A5 and A7. Along with the UA shuttle concourse. There are some large picture windows looking out at 28 L/R. Thats a great place to watch landing planes.

[I just posted this in response to someone elses message before I saw this thread, but it applies here as well - sorry for the double post]

I just went through SFO yesterday. My flight arrived at 8am and I scheduled my connection back home at 4pm (the travel agent was baffled about that one!).

Anyway, shooting from the new international terminal(s) is great. You can color correct for the slight window tint when you scan your images. Here is what I can remember shooting from memory (slides won’t be back for another few days):

International G wing: NW 742F, EVA 744, Singapore A340, Mexicana A320, Atlas 744F, ANA 777, Lufthansa 744 and A340 and, of course, United 744, 777, 767, 757, A320, etc.

International A wing: Asiana 744Combi, KLM Asia 744Combi, JAL 744, Philippines A340, BA 744, Virgin 744, China Air 744, Allegro 727, NW 742, Alitalia 767

It’s hard to get everything because of the sun angles and the amount of running around you have to do but it’s fun trying!

PS. Also, the American Airlines wing is good for stuff on north/south runways as long at there are not planes parked at the gates.
