The One That Got Away?

Wed Feb 14, 2001 11:38 pm

Hi all

Anyone had the experience of seeing a nice/special photo opportunity but not had the camera or camera ready?

Happened to me twice.

On sunny days I like to take the camera in the back of the car to work just incase there is something nice at the airport. My work looks on to the main runway at Aberdeen. On a particular day I ventured out to work and thought, s***, I have forgot the camera. Thought nothing more of it.

So passing the reception area I had a glance out the window and low and behold....what was there....a Saudi TriStar  Sad It was taxiing for departure in beautiful sunshine. I have never felt so sad in all my plane photography days. I think it was taking some Saudi Prince to Balmoral for lunch with the Queen.

The second time was not so heart rendering. It was a very foggy morning at Aberdeen, but clear skies with sun, if you know what I mean.

I was watching the aircraft arrive but never had a radio so did not know what was on finals. Local traffic came and it was great watching them landing through the mist but it wasn't that dramatic...........until......I heard the nose of jet engines in the distance. The camera was in the car then all of a sudden out of the mist came an Air Holland 757 with vortices gallore. The mist was being spread everyhwere.

I was so unhappy  Crying

Sorry if the above was long winded but anyone else had similar experiences when you have said to yourself 'S***, where is the camera!

Happens alot. Like the photo you (Gary) took with the high altitude jets "chasing each other"....last month I saw three high altitude contrailed jets crossing very "close" (I am sure they were only visually close) to each other. I was driving. Camera in back seat without large lens. Nice light. Too bad!!!!

There were loads of times when my camera was checked in as luggage and a was like wandering around in departure area with huge windows overlooking rwys without a chance to shoot.

I feel like an idiot at that times. I always try to carry it in my pocket these days (APS cams are tiny enough) when I'm near an airport, etc.

That's life..........I guess it happened to all of us.

I remember one time I was going home from work and I literally live at Boston Logan Airport, I stopped and guess what I saw, a Saudi M11, probably with the Royal Family onboard. I had the camera with me but was not fast enough. Another time same scenario this time it was a Saudi B743, I took a picture but unfortunaltey I was already passed sunset so guess what, the picture was blurry and I threw the slide away.

Ever since I have my scanner with me all the time and if there is a special weather scenario I will take the camera as well.

Last Wednesday I was lucky. On the way to work, it was a beautiful day outside, cold but sunny and Rwy 27 was in use. Guess what I saw, United Arab Emirates BJ
737-800 ......coming soon to

Yes I was flying in a Squirrel formation and we had fog below us and cloud above us and as far as you could see. There was aring of Blue sky 360 degrees around us with what looked like about 3 4 inches of sky between the fog and cloud
