Are These Photos Not Appropriate For The Database?

Sun Mar 04, 2001 1:02 am

I uploaded two photos last month which were not accepted. I tried to get them uploaded again. The first one was rejected due to aesthetic quality/bad angle and the second because the aircraft is far away in the picture(!!??). Can't we upload pictures that show an aircraft from the front view?

Also:What do you think of the following?

I think you're on the right track, but your shots appear to be a bit bland for two reasons:

1. Grey, dull environment
2. Standard angles / cropping

What I mean by the standard angles / cropping is that you have appeared to put much effort into getting the entire plane in the picture. This creates (for me, anyway) just a snapshot and NOT a photograph. Don't be afraid to zoom in. Show us the power...show us what it's REALLY like to be servicing a 747 for turnaround (as in your second shot).

To see what I'm talking about, take a look at a recent shot by Colin K. Wok:

He has created a story with this picture...gear up, heading up and away at a nice angle, leaving plenty of open space in the upper right corner of the photo (this helps to show direction). I can almost hear the rumble...

Anyway, you are on the right track. I like the fact that you included the ground/airport in your last two approach shots.

Good luck!

Scooter has a point. Your pictures are not bad, but I don't know if they are airliners.net material.
Johan said earlier that a nose photo is easylier accepted if it is spectacular, artistic, or special in other ways. But if the quality is good enough, it should pass.

The nr.3 picture (I think) is a little far away. I've got pictures of planes closer than that, and they have still been rejected with the same reasons.

Good luck anyway.

Both Scooter and Thohm@s have some valid points, although I differ somewhat on a few of your photos.

1 This first shot as Scooter implied should have been a tighter crop. The blast wall and the car at the bottom right really hurt this image.

2 Actually I rather like this shot, the blast wall makes a nice frame because unlike the above metioned photo where the push back is cut in half, in the 2nd photo everything is in tact and the entire aircraft is visable. Although the fence in the lower left side of the picture is a little bothersome.

3 I agree with Johan, way to far off and grainy.

4 Nice composition and angle(I like rear 3/4 angle shots), but.........waaaay too soft and grainy.

I do not believe that the weather was really a factor in these shots being rejected, if that were the case then A.Net's database would not be so huge. But, like Scooter and Thom@s, I beleive that better cropping and tighter shots will result in more uploads. Remember on those approach "Fill the frame".

BTW, What type of film was used...400 ? Go with something in the 100-200 iso neighbourhood.

Yes he was. And this was a once in many years shooting. Such planes don't come to Athens frequently. The 400 film was the only one i could find in my bag, so the pics came out gray and grainy. Later on I found out that i had a 200 film with me also, so i used it for the ground shots of these planes.

They did look a little blurry. The third pick did not have much in it, just the 744 at the top and that's it.

Lewis,

I realize that sometimes you have neither the time nor the access to get a “perfect shot” (whatever that is), but:

1) If possible you should have waited until the caterers truck was moved, some of the other vehicles moved and even for the ladder truck to move (sometimes they don’t)

2) You don’t need to put the plane in the exact center of the frame – you can focus and meter with it in the center then recompose so that you have lots of sky. Put the plane at the bottom of the frame and cut out the walls and fences.

3) If it was possible to move around, try to get more of the side of the a/c. I don’t mean a side shot, but just a wee bit over so that you’re more at ¾ front.

4) I like the composition of the third shot very much, but as was stated above, it’s a bit blurry

Keep shooting! I envy you on the subject you caught… nice!

Sunil
