How It All Started-your First Airliners.net Photo

Thu Apr 19, 2001 1:34 am

Having seen AviationIvi's post about his first accepted photo made me curious about how things started for a lot of the photographers here? I'm sure a lot were quite accomplished before ever starting to post photos here and some were starting out from very humble beginnings. My first photo on Airliners.net is certainly in the latter group and is nothing to rave about but that didn't dampen my enthusiasm at the time.

I suppose the ultimate pioneer is Rob Rindt who has photo #1. How did it begin on Airliners.net for you?

Cheers,
Felix

Well, after many many many rejections, I finally found out how to use the scanner (better). And on the 24th of october 2000, I got these 4 pictures accepted.

Hi Felix,
Well the craze all started for me last August when I just couldn't bare looking at all the brill pics on this site without giving it a try myself. I got my first camera at Christmas (Minolta Dynax 404Si / STSi). I've only shot under 10 rolls but I'm REALLY  Big thumbs up loving it. Currently I have 49 photos on here, which I'm really chuffed about.

Here's my first two (accepted together)

Wow, I seem to be older here!!! Here are my first pics. When I went to trips as a kid, I would shoot some photos but not many. The first photo of mine at A.net is from Heathrow, but the first pic taken is the last one here:

Well I've been interested in aviation photography for about 1 1/2 years. I just didn't have the right equipment until recently. I used to use an Olympus point and shoot and had an extremely crummy scanner.

Well that changed a few months ago when I bought my first SLR and a new scanner. I admit, I am a bit too lazy to upload photos to Airliners.net But right now there are 9 in the que line, just waiting for a confirmation, its been about a week. Oh well....he gets a load of photos so I can understand.

Anyways here is my first and ONLY photo:

I really dislike this photo mainly because of the grain. I used Gold 100, but it turned out very grainy anyway. Anyways, I'm going to start shooting Reala 100 for a while and then move on to slides.

Kind regards,
Ahmad

I have always loved planes, and always taken pictures of them - very amateurish pictures. However, after my summer job was finished and I had developed all those LHR shots I had taken from the tower, I could no longer resist the temptation to try and upload some.

Out of 8 or 10 shots these were the only ones that made it - currently my acceptance ratio is slurching around 10%, still.

There is no 'open' option..only cancel...and I'm using Netscape. I'm talking about the save location thinggy--once it starts downloading, and it reaches 100....oh screw it, it's too hard to explain...and I'm getting off the topic.

Hi.

This is a cringe posting! Embarrassment

I've been looking at this website since it started and I tried a test upload last October just to see what happens.

It got accepted. Looking back, it's too blurry for me.
(Pre-GIMP days!)
It probably got in 'coz there's not many Kamov photo's in a.net.

also a little story behind this pic: the ATR was holding short and 3 Gulfstreams (2 IVs & 1 II) landed along with a Citation IV and all parked together..i went over there and got my first ramp tour and my first cockpit visit with a picture!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

p.s. notice the cows in the background on the hillside...yes there are farms that close to the airport...the alsf II approach lights run right through them...

Bo:
I just went over the the old (and i say old because it's been moved) Tri-City Aviation FBO and asked if i could get a few pictures of the aircraft sitting there...they were glad to have me come out there and even the copilot of the GII showed me around the airplane...so all you have to do is ask...and they can't give out ramp access badges (i was just denied)..so an employee has to take you out there...just make some friends and some connections out at the airport..when you spend a lot of time out there you get to know people. just my $.02  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Jonathan: Thanks for your kind comments. IT was taken with my Pentax ME Super older than I am(16), with an 80-200 zoom lens about the same age(HA to anyone who says ALL zoom lenses that old suck).

I have a passion for that kind of light, I absolutely love being out and about at that time of day(too bad it only lasts a few minutes!!!).

Come to MHT sometime and I will show you around!

I must agree, that is really a great shot Cullen. One type of photography I absolutely love is early morning shots, it doesn't have to be aviation, ANYTHING. The sun coming up over the mountains (thats how it is here in Colorado).

Keep up the good work Cullen.

You might not believe it but i took this picture with a plain Minolta p & s camera. Right after that i bought myself a SLR!

Back when there was 40,000 photos on here (long time ago) I finally got my first one up. Must have taken me a few months (I didn't have my own scanner, and I used that crappy Kodak CD). I think the first time I visited this site, there was around 20,000-25,000 photos.

But as you can see it is of bad quality (much too dark)and was my first ever try to scan a photo!!!

Ohh...

This is my first photo. It makes me cringe when i look at it now, but the actual print hangs in my room still to this day. I was 13 and my family and I were waiting to depart on OH-LGA here to Helsinki. I asked if I could take my dad's camera and take a picture. He said sure. I took it, and it wasn't until several years later before I "test uploaded" one to airliners.net. When it got accepted I was psyched. Oh well, cutting to the chase, here it is!

Well it took me many attempts to work out how to use my scanner and programs so that my photos would look kind of reasonable. I eventually got 4 photos accepted and since then I have only gotten another 16 uploaded  Sad It doesnt get much easier to get them accepted thats for sure. BO_ing, I recently scored a ramp tour by simply talking nice to the safety inspector. Though he actually asked me if I wanted to go for a tour  Big grin

Ive been meaning to scan some of the 160 odd photos I took on my recent trip to CNS, but finding the will power to do so is another story..........

It started 5 minutes ago for me, as I received my first confirmation of acceptance. Funny thing is I tried and tried to get one accepted with shots from my 3.1 MP digital camera, but to no avail. It wasn't until I dug through the prints taken with a cheap film point-and-shoot from past trips that I found this photo: my first acceptance on airliners.net. I really think my digital camera puts out better pictures, but for some reason film came out on top in this case. Seems ironic that the camera I put the most money in to, and the shots I spent much longer planning, failed me, and the cheap snapshot won out! Maybe the fact that I was closer to the plane in this picture helped out, or maybe because the plane/location/carrier are less common, I don't know. It is nice to finally have a shot in the database. Hopefully when I get better with the digital camera and after I add the 2x teleconverter I can add more photos to airliners.net.

I took this photo when I first started getting into aviation photography. Considering my experience and the equipment I was using Im rather pleased with the shot

The one with the lowest ID would be this one, the scan is from a badly scratched print of N81028 taken back in 1979. This was my 2nd photo I uploaded.

I tried for weeks to get my first pic uploaded. I had taken the photo some time before i actually made an attempt. When i did actually stumble accross this site one day u decided to give it a go.

200 odd days later i have 170 odd photos up.

Below is the first pic i got accepted!

>>My first photo on Airliners.net is certainly in the latter group and is nothing to rave about but that didn't dampen my enthusiasm at the time.<<

The problem with airliners.net is that non-established
snappers have their enthusiasm dampened from day 1!

The FAQ about 1024x724 pics not being interfered with
is craaaaaap! };-(

I have been around long enough to be a cynic of the
first order and believe me, most rejections from airliners.net are down to 'culling' rather than inspection.

Sir,
do you mind telling what you actually mean?
