Your New Photo Viewing Patterns

Tue Apr 24, 2001 4:42 am

I realize that a lot of the people in this forum are very concerned with taking, scanning, and uploading your own photos but I'm sure many of you also spend quite a bit of time viewing those of others. I'm wondering what your typical viewing pattern is? Do you go page by page through the new photos viewing those that interest you or do you tend to look more at the most popular photos (24-48 hours, 7 days, month, ...). Do you check up to see what particular photographers are doing or to see what is coming from your own airport? It seems to me that when photos are added but not within the first 5 pages or so that they won't attract much interest unless they can manage to be special enough to make it onto the 24-48 hour list. I'm curious if you think that the introduction of the Best Of lists has had a major effect on yourself or how your photos are getting viewed based on the hits that they generate.

Personally I mostly view the 24-48 hour and sometimes the 7 days list when I'm at home with my slow connection. When I have access to a fast connection I'm more patient and I take the time to go through many pages of new additions.

Cheers,
Felix

I am online almost every day and I check the pages with the newly added pics. I only look at some of them, usually in 120 pics/page. Only the ones that look interesting. I would really like to look at all of them but I dont have much time.

i have a cable modem so it's easy to just go through all the new uploads...when i'm done with those i look at those lists that felix talked about...or even sometimes choose a random photo!

I try to look at all new photographs - well, at least the thumbnails, and then view the larger versions of those pictures I'm particularly interested in for whatever reason. Even when I was away for a week, I still plowed through the thumbnails for every new photo when I got back - sad or what?

I do not find the "most popular" views particularly useful and I rarely use them, because the photos that interest me are typically not the photographs that are most popular - I am usually interested in unusual or "different" aircraft and colour schemes, and I am also interested in looking at the sort of pictures that can be obtained at airports I might visit in the future. The most popular tends towards (a) action shots, (b) wide body jets, particularly 747s and (c) artistic shots. Nothing wrong with the most popular lists, its just not what I'm usually looking for on airliners.net, and for folks who are interested in airplanes in general who just look at the most popular lists, I think they are missing something.

What I do agree on is this - it seems to me that if new photos end up at the back end of a large upload, they tend to get far fewer hits, even if they are great shots, which implies that a lot of people start to plow through all new uploads and perhaps loose interest after a while for some reason.

I usually choose a random search, as i am usually just looking for a good pic to look at. You find some interesting ones using that search Big grin

I also once every 6 months check whether anyone has uploaded any from my local Airport, Bristol International (BRS/EGGD). But there are only 2 so far. There is a pic from BRS in a major aviation Book which looks pretty spectacular but i can't ask if i can get the company/taker of the shot to add it to the database.

I first do a check to see if there are any new photos up from any of the Montreal airports. Then I just look at all of the recent uploads as I have a fast internet connection.

There are always so many new ones that it takes an hour to look at them all with my connection. I usually look at just the new ones, but a few times I've looked at the ones most viewed in the past 24 hrs...because the better ones are usually near the top.

I check the newest uploads for Australia each day (several times) and then usually go through a few pages of the most popular shots of the last 24-48 hours, but only a few pages!

Since we observed a while ago that viewing patterns are quite irregular, I think you would miss quite a few good shots when only going through the most popular lists.
As a minimum, I always check special schemes, cabin interiors and airport overviews as well, if possible on a daily basis.

My cookie never seems to work so I always go through best of 24-48h to see which good pictures have been added. Mostly I watch the big images of special shots. I check "standard" shots of photographers where I know I get good quality I check some photographers quite regularly and from time to time some airports. I also check any special kind of aircraft, registration or airport when I need to see a special one.

Hi all

Maybe a late entry for this posting.....but I go through all pages to view the new photos.

I don't see the point of viewing only the most popular of the last 24-48 hours.....as you are only looking at what others have viewed as being popular.....the shots might not appeal to me, for example row upon row of AA and Delta aircraft.

All the big stuff, 747's A340's etc maybe get the most views but I like to see the little stuff like the tiny Cessnas.

Depends On What You Like

If you're used to all DL and AA widebodies you might check the new photos on something you probably like better. Maybe you're right with saying you only watch what others have already chosen for you. I'm a lot interested in some DL or AA aircraft because we don't have them here but I could look through the new pictures more often.
The main reason for watching "most popular of last 24-48h" is that I don't always have so much time so I won't miss the most spectacular shots cause they're always there when I hava a quick look.
