Photo Spots At These Airports?

Mon May 07, 2001 2:33 am

Hi! My family and I are in the process of planning our summer vacation. We have it narrowed down to Florida (we'd be flying into Orlando) and Chicago (flying into MDW). My mother told me that wherever we go, she'd let me hang around the airport for awhile and take photos. I was wondering if any of you knew good photo spots for planes at the gate, or approaching the runway at Orlando Intl (MCO), Chicago Midway (MDW) and Chicago O'Hare (ORD)? I'd really appreciate it, as is this is my first chance in my life to get photos of widebody airliners (the last time I saw one I wasn't interested in planes, and thought nothing of it)! I'm very excited about it!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy BTW-I know Midway doesn't get widebodies, but if we go to Chicago we'd be flying into Midway, and I'd be taking pictures at Midway and O'Hare. Also, if anyone could give me an idea of what to expect alot of at Orlando please tell me! Thanks again for your time! I really appreciate the help!

You won't see any widebodies at MDW. Don't even bother with Midway, it's not worth it. I can't stand to even transfer through there that place is so miserable.

Do ORD simply because of the variety. Do a search on ORD spotting and you'll find out all of the good spots.

I don't agree with Midway; you won't see anything larger than 737 and 727, but I happen to like'em ! Photography is difficult, though. has quite a bit of info, suggest to look there. Happy travels,

Will you have a chance to go outside at MCO, or not? Inside is still great, you can't really get anything from the inside landing on the 18's, but you can get all the British heavies landing on runway 17, and all the Delta stuff also. We'll have Saudi back in June, so that's 5 747's for MCO.

With all due respect to Mark's comments on MDW, I believe that MDW does off the photographer some possibilities. Having only flown through ORD on my many trips to Chicago, I researched all the photos in the A.Net database before writing this reply. There are some fine examples taken at MDW (some rather recently). Granted the biggest plane that MDW gets (or use to get) is ATA's 757.

Just because an airport houses no jumbos, does not necessarily mean that it is dull. The trick is to go beyond the cliche, namely the side (profile) shot, or the rotation/landing/approach shots ect... Use the buildings and the surrouding area as a back drop. If you have the time walk or rent a car, check out the parimeter of the airport. Research some of the photos of this airport in the A.Net database, you see something you like ? contact the photographer and ask his or her advice on technique, security ect... Granted you may need some 'big glass' to get some of these shots, still you should be able to get some good images with a minimal of equipment. MDW is a like BOS in one regard, in that it is very close to the downtown area and depending on the wind direction (and lenses) one could get some 'Garfinkle' type of shots say of a WN 737 as it ascends towards the skyline.

Airways magazine (Jan/Feb 1997) has a fine article on MDW as well as ORD.

Thanks! No offense to Brick, but I know there are no widebodies at MDW  Smile/happy/getting dizzy. I'm getting excited about this because the last time I saw a jumbo was the last of the TWA 747-100s at their maintenance base here in Kansas City (I think it was about four years ago, I was only in like 5th grade). I knew what it was, but that was still back in the days when I thought we had substantial widebody traffic at MCI.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy I didn't know much then. Thanks for the help!

ATA will bring its 757-300s to Midway at some point in the future. That will be the largest a/c operating there.
