LAX Get-to-gether?

Sun May 13, 2001 12:57 pm

Hi all, I will be in the LAX area with Brian Stevenson, Ryan Gaddis, and possibly one or 2 more. We'll be out there from June 7-10 (they might stay longer, but that's all the time off I could get). If any one is interested in spotting with us, drop me a line at Dazed767@aol.com.

Justin, unfortunately it's probably too late to change your plans, but June is THE worst, and I do mean THE worst possible time to shoot at LAX. The sun is quite honestly above your head ALL day long. I've done LAX in late August and that was much too high for me... LAX is prime between the end of November, to early February. If you plan on doing a winter run down to LAX, count me in! (that goes for MIA aswell)

You ever going to come down to Phoenix? I don't remember ever seeing any photos of yours from here.

Check the database Saul... I've been to PHX in Aug'98. BIG mistake... too hot, and the sun was too high. I'll go maybe next winter... I like that elevated car-park facing east... but I do like the airport... even if it's WN and HP all day long!  Laugh out loud

Don't let Rob disappoint you. LAX is not a total waste in June. Just plan on doing most of your shooting in the early morning (south side 25L/R) and in the evenings (24L/R). As long as you have days without the summer fog rolling in the evenings you should be fine.

Oh and by the way, I am all for a PHX get together next winter. I tried to get down this last winter, but never made it. Last time I was at PHX was June of 95 to shoot the America West Express F70's!

It's not THAT bad in June. Your biggest problem, as Richard mentioned above, is the fog. Commonly referred to as "June Gloom" or "May Gray" around here, it's pretty thick stuff that rolls in off the water.

Worst case scenario, you're looking at sun from about 12pm until 3pm...but it doesn't happen every day. Just keep your fingers crossed...

Hey, if you guys are doing a Phoenix shoot next winter, I'd be tempted to make the trip from the UK! Love the place, and I might even offer to hire an aircraft (me driving!) and fly a few folks over Davis Monthan, etc.

Anyone got a contact to get in at Marana though?  Big grin

I don't mean to piss in anyones Wheaties, but I too would strongly advise against a visit to LAX during the summer months. With the high sun angle during most of the day, you're only going to get about 3 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the evening to shoot. That's assuming the clouds don't get you. You also have to consider that unless you are standing right next to an aircraft, your photos of taxiing aircraft or aircraft on the ground will be distorted from the heat radiating from the concrete. That leaves you with with shooting approach shots...then you'll see how beautiful the haze and smog look at the bottom of your pictures. Most of your photos will have a nasty, brown bottom to them. Finally, one of the best photo spots around the airport is a terrible spot in the summer (I'm referring the big cargo lot). That leaves you with the TWA lot and maybe the holding pen (assuming you don't get kicked out of there which they are starting to do with increasing frequency) to shoot at. Those are not the best spots. They're good, but not great.

Just wait until the winter so you have all day to shoot, you don't have to deal with as much smog, the heat won't cause as many problems, and you can take advantage of the best spot at LAX. I'm not saying you can't get good photos in the summer time, but you will have a lot of things that will conspire against you in getting quality photos.
