Looking For My First Scanner - What To Buy?

Fri Jun 01, 2001 3:24 am

Hi there,
Up to now all my photos on this site were developed on CD but I'll be in the market for a film scanner in a few months and I'm not sure what to buy. I've heard good things about the Minolta Dimage Scan Dual but nobody seems to sell it anymore in Europe. The Dual II is just too expensive for me.
My budget is no more than US$450 or about IR£400

Any recommendations would be greatly welcome

Martin

Mors!

I bought a Minolta Dimage Scan Dual II and it's terrific. Bought it for about 400USD (or about 3800SEK) here in Sweden. That's a reasonable price I think.

Would recommend it strongly!

Yes, that budget should be enough for the II.

I just bought a Minolta Scan dual II for $414US. Still waiting for it to come via UPS. Hopefully Monday or Tuesday.

Looking forward to scan some slides.

Hi Fredrik,

With that scanner can you scan black and white negative strips?

Also can you show some results with that scanner, telling if they're slides or negatives.

Thanks, I'm totally ignorant with these kind of scanners.

Hi Luis!

You can scan colour or b/w-negative strips (max 6 in a row) or four mounted slides.

Have a couple of slides in the upload-cue for Airliners.net... no negatives however. Have not yet gained experience since I've only had it for like a week. But it seems to work real horrorshow, negatives too. Actually I'll try to scan some b/w-negative later, even though it isn't as fun as making copies in a darkroom!  Smile

I think Jan's slides here on Airliners.net is scanned with Minolta DSD II, isn't that correct Jan? Maybe you have some experience with scanning negatives?

Fredrik, Luis and all,
I really seldom shoot negatives, so not many scanned.
The only times I use neg is when I desperately need the speed, so they are grainy. I have some military stuff, but haven't decided if I'm gonna upload them or not.

Given your budget, look out for a discounted Nikon LS30 Coolscan III - some shops have cut the price on these to make way for the new Nikon range ... but its still a damn good scanner AND it will be able to use the new Nikon software in the near future.

Cheers,

I've scanned a few B/W ones. However these are non aviation and taken with (I think) 400ASA and therefore not of such a high quality. If I had a high quality (100ASA or something) negative I would have scanned it, but can't find any!  Sad
Looking forward to Jan's negative photos...
Anyway, the results are good, in class with the copies I've made from the photos. So I guess Minolta DSD II work well together with negatives. BTW, you can scan both positive and negative B/W's with it.

Here's one of the photos I just scanned:

One thing to note with scanning B&W film - the digital dust/scratch removal available with some scanners won't work - something to do with the silver content of the film.

Cheers,

Thanks all for the reply to my question about scanning negatives. Jan, I already saw some photos scanned from negatives that Andy Martin kindly send me.
I have doubts with the quality of scanned negatives, they doesn't look much better than my scanned prints.

thanks

Luis, I think you're right. I've tried to scan some negatives now, both b/w and colour. All seem to turn out almost exacly as the scanned prints, even though I've used different settings etc. etc.

But it's great for slides!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

When you say all your photos were developed from a CD, does that mean you had the film scanned somewhere else........if so, where? THey're charging $3 per scan at my local camera store what are you paying?

No. When I say that I mean they were directly developed onto the CD. I never got prints from them either

How much did that cost you per a roll of film?
