Good News And Bad News

Sat Jun 09, 2001 7:49 am

Guys

I have a personal achievement I would like to share with you Good and Bad.

3 days ago worldairroutes(JUST PLANES VIDEOS) contacted me about a Channel Express A300 picture I have on airliners.net. They wanted to use the photo for the cover of there video about Channel Express.

I contacted the chap who was very grateful and agreed with him I would shoot some extra subjects next day at work which I did. I got him the extra shots he needed for the cover's. Good News is that the cover has been completed with my images front and back and the video is due for release on July 5th. (Well Pleased) Next time you are in the hobby shop look out for the Channel Express video.

On a bad note!
I was flicking through Aircraft Illustrated magazine at work and I came across a article about Eastern Airways I instantly noticed MY PHOTO was there without permission or credit. WHAT A SHOCK!
The photo in the mag showed G-BYRM a Jetstream 31 aircraft which has just arrived at Edinburgh. Its not on Airliners.net but the next framed shot is, i.e 3 seconds later.

I work in aviation and knew the guys in Eastern ops and I have sent them pictures in the past for there office wall's or there Internet sight. We didn't agree on term and conditions as It was never planned to use them in this way.

If you have the mag flick to page 76 and 77 of the Jun 2001 edition.

I sent the magazine this letter.

Dear Sir/Madam

I was browsing through Aircraft Illustrated Jun 2001 edition tonight and I found an article on Eastern Airways. The article called Eastern Promise is located on pages 76 and 77. The only photograph on the page belongs to me, i.e. my copyright . I am slightly bewildered on how you managed to use my photograph in your article without my permission.

I work in the aviation industry and know the guys in Eastern Airways operations. I did send them this picture in low-res format for use on their wall! Or future web site photographs unaware they would use for a national
publication without any credit. Not very professional if they did so.

I have tried for years to have my photos published and to see them in this way without any credit is VERY disappointing.

As you can tell I'm angry and would like to know why my picture appears in your magazine without my permission.

I am a regular reader of your magazine, which now may change.

Please let me know what happened!

Thank You
Colin Abbott

It happens...the last Transaer video cover photo is mine, like the SATA Int.

You own copyright on whatever photos you make unless you specifically sign it over to someone else.
Just giving them a print or scan of a photo does not transfer copyright in any law I know of. If they did indeed use your photo (and not some other that happens to look remarkably like it, maybe someone standing in the same spot the next day for example) they should pay you for using it and give a public apology (well, I'd want one...).

Guys

Further to my story.

I thought I didn't have the actual photograph on airliners.net but I do.

This is the exact photograph they used

The photograph was taken airside from Jetty 10 steps so the chance of a normal punter shooting it "FAT Chance"

Close inspection you can see a steamed up captain's window, exact prop stop shot etc etc. That's also on the final print.

If you would like to see a copy of the article with my photo just email me and I will send it ASAP.

Thanks
Colin

I'm sure you gave your permission for this use, right?

I have a friend who has also been published in Airliner World and not received credit for the photograph. Has anyone else on this forum had problems with this magazine? I have only submitted one shot to them so far and I did receive credit in the June issue. My shot is of the Horizon CRJ-700 series that was on a promotional tour down to American Eagle officials at DFW.

Jay and Cabbott - Hold onto your hats!

Following all the negative comments regarding Airliners World, curiousity finally killed the cat today, and I purchased a copy of Airliners World July 2001 edition to read while travelling to LHR. When I turned to PAGE 38, I recognized the top photograph immediately.

Unless I'm mistaken its:

No credit, no surprise. This said, whether VG gave permission, I don't know, but more fuel for the flames!!

So it's possible Airliner World mag is using Airliners.Net photographs?

Pherhaps Vasco Garcia would care to comment.

It sounds like there is a few of us here that are unhappy with Airliner World mag.

I did recive a email from the editor regarding my photograph of the GO BA146. He said he was sorry as the photograph was sent as a attachment in a email and my name was lost somehow. I would have thought that if you didn't have the correct info you shouldn't publish.

Maybe they are short of material?

Better post an amendment to my previous post.

VG is actually credited with another photograph on page 43 of the July 2001 issue. However, further down is states "All photos Author unless stated"!

I actually think its poor production and finishing. Some of the early editions has photographs where the image has been reversed. eg with the registration reading back to front.

I have had several pictures in Airliner.world - no problems with either credits or payment.

They probably get hundreds of submissions to look through etc and with only a small team - the odd mistake is inevitable. Am sure other publications make the odd errors from time to time.

Filton Airshow at Filton, in Bristol UK, last Saturday. I am not sure whether the tent was from an outside company or not. It was kind of on a large board (ya know, History of Aviation etc)

Sorry i couldn't have been more help, i was dying of heat exhaustion  Smile
