Spotting Tips For Stewart International NY

Mon Jun 11, 2001 4:40 am

A while back someone was kind enough to provide me with a couple of spotting location tips for Stewart Airport (NY). If you've been to the main terminal before, the opportunities are fair at best. However the airport is partly bordered by hills and I suspected and was then led to beleive a good spot or two might be found along one of the roads in the area. Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom,

I was curious on this airport myself. How big is the main terminal? Does it look older or newer inside?

I have been trying to get there for months now, we just haven't found the time. What airlines service the airport? Prehaps I need to give up asking to stop by there on family trips and just fly to the place.

As for the hills. I would guess you could get some decent shots with a 400mm+. You could get some shots from your car of planes landing in over I-84  Smile with a 200mm quite easily. To my knowledge, there is an overview of the airport in the database. Search for "Newburgh Stewart".

Regards & thanks,
Cullen

Guys,

I'm still trying to find out what happened to the F-86D gate guard they had there when it was Stewart AFB. So, if you spot an old dog-nosed Sabrejet on your travels around the airport, let me know.

PS. I assume you are after airliners, but the Herks and Galaxies will probably catch your attention also.

The Herks and most especially the Galaxies definitely get my attention. Long runway makes for good possibilities. Saw an AA 727 there a 2/3 years back. Fighter jets of some sort too. 727 w/winglets (AMEX?) is based there. Remember a Pan Am 747 many years ago...(touch and go? -- looked nice climbing over the Hudson at low altitude anyway.) Some mil choppers for West Point jaunts...State Police choppers too..Someone (JoeP?) nailed a Middle-East A300 VIP..etc. just need to find the spots i guess.
