Spotting In San Diego Ksan And Kmyf Help!

Fri Jun 15, 2001 3:59 am

Hi guys, Aaron here.

Well tomorrow afternoon I am on my way to San Diego once again, and will have the chance to do some spotting finally.

I was wondering if anyone knows where great spotting locations are at KSAN and KMYF=Montgomery Field?

I think i have seen a Mr. Bill Alicia from San Diego on here, if you see this, please help.

I am looking for locations for good landing shots with great views.

Thanks

Aaron, email Scott Lezendby or David aka Hawaiian717.

For KSAN (Lindbergh Field), the best spot is Laurel Street. There is a small parking lot at the corner of Laurel and Harbor Drive right next to the airport perimeter fence, and a larger one across Harbor. You may have some difficulty getting photos from there though, as there are a couple of fences in the way (if you have access to a truck or SUV that will help). Alternatively, you can walk towards Pacific Highway along Laurel, and take photos from the sidewalk. There is also a parking lot right next to you, but it is privately owned by Solar Turbine and they're not very spotter friendly. Some security guy may eventually come by and ask you to leave.

KMYF (Montgomery Field) has an open ramp. You can pretty much drive anywhere, get out and take photos. If you see someone, it's a good idea to make sure they don't mind if you take photos of their airplane just to be courteous.

KSDM (Brown Field) is pretty much the same as KMYF.

Hope this helps,

Hi,

I'd agree with Hawaiian 717 - the small parking lot at the corner of Laurel and Harbor is great. The cost of a hire car for the day is worth it just so that you've got something to stand on! Just be careful about dents in the roof or semi-circular scratches as you pan landing aircraft.

There is also a multi-storey car park almost right on the approach line (you'll see it from the Laurel location) and if you can spend an hour or two on top of that you can get some really different shots of aircraft looking down the runway, almost on the center line.

KYMF doesn't have much airline stuff but there may be a few twins or even an AN-2... KSDM can be difficult to find but might be worthwhile as there's often a Mexican Convair there. Both, as Hawaiian717 says, have fairly open ramps.

Enjoy!

There's no airline traffic at either KMYF or KSDM, but there are cargo flights. In particular, Ameriflight operates Metros and other small props to both airports.
