Why Is There The Orange Masking On Negative Films?

Sat Jun 16, 2001 5:54 pm

Could someone please explain why the negatives have this orange masking? Why is it orange and not another color? Or why isn't it fully transparent?

Best question I have seen here in awhile! I had to look it up myself. Here I found a reasonable explanation, http://www.photo.net/photo/orange-negative-mask.

Now, can somebody translate it?

It is becuase at some stage, light has got onto the film plane or inside the canister. More likely, the back of the camera has let in light. The photographic lab might have expossed it also!

???
I don't understand the linked site and i still dont get it. Tough question, huh? The masking creates better color accuracy??? And prints from the slides dont have that accuracy?? Very weird to me.
