Any Thoughts On These Pics?

Mon Jun 25, 2001 12:13 pm

Any comments on these photos is greatly appreciated. The KLM 747 shot seems a tad grainy, do you think it'll make the cut?

Very nice pics indeed, looks like a.net material to me. What scanner do you use?

Great spotting location!!

i think the KLM has the best chance, the others however are on the wrong side of the sun, otherwise, pretty good (as is the KLM, but it still looks ok)

Personally, the only one that stands a chance is the KLM shot... Had you been on the other side, with the sun behind you, it would most likely be easily accepted. The AirFrance is a little "soft" and is in overcast conditions... there's nothing worse than a white plane, with a white background. As for the AC 320, same deal as the KLM, and if the tail wasn't chopped off, it would certainly stand a chance...

Just my .02 cdn cents...

Rob

CYKA,

Scanner's an HP6300c. Not the best for scanning negs but it does the job.

Hi Stephan,

I agree with Rob about the KLM 747. With better lighting (the sun behind you rather than the plane) it would have a good chance. 55th avenue is a great place to shoot from but at the time that KLM's flight leaves you're shooting right into the sun. I learned the hard way (many wasted shots at first) that unless you're trying for a particular effect you really need to be conscious of the lighting and not force the issue just to get a shot. It means that you will occasionally miss something exciting like a 747 liftoff but the shots that you do take will be much more consistent and more likely to get accepted.

I go to a variety of locations at Dorval depending on the runway that I want, the wind direction, and the time of day and in just about every case the primary consideration is the lighting since it can make a huge difference to the quality of the shot. I was in the same position as you this time last year when I had almost no luck getting photos accepted and now I am getting photos accepted consistently and placing lighting as a matter of prime importance made an amazing difference. If you like check my profile and e-mail me if you want some tips on how to improve your chances of getting photos accepted and also if you feel like shooting at Dorval together some time.

Cheers,
Felix

Thanks guys,

Yeah Felix, I know what you mean. Dorval can be a tricky place to get those good shots, especially around 55th. BTW, saw your KLM shot - you must have been shooting oposite to my location that day or thereabouts. I just thought that the effect would be kind of neat with the orange sky and all. Been to a few locations around the airport and saw an opportunity or two slip by - didn't have my camera with me. How many times does that happen..  Sad
