I'm Looking For A New Scanner...

Thu Jul 19, 2001 4:47 am

hi

I have an old scanner (Highscreen RealScan) and it doesn't satisfied me anymore, i found the restitution of the colors and the general quality of the picture low.

So I am looking for a good quality photo-scanner, and i really don't know which one I should choose. A normal scanner or a negative-scanner ? which mark and which model ?

Can anybody help me in my choice or give me good advice.

Thanks, Flavien

(you can also answer me in French, eheh, my english is not so good)

I have a HP 5730 flatbed scanner, i've had it about six months and I have now just started to get some good results. The reason I bought this one was because I scan a number of different items e.g books, negatives and prints so I found this the best value for my money, so the best thing to do is work out what you want it for and your budget and then shop around.

I hope this is of some help.

Minolta Scan Dual II is a good choice for negative or slides. I am satisfied with the quality so far.

Unless you want a 100% rejection rate, don't buy a flat bed scanner. No matter how good the pictures look, they will not be good enough for Airliners.net. If you have the money, a film/slide scanner is the best option.

I agree with B757300. Don't use a flatbad. I'm using a Minolta Scan Dual II and it's doing a great job...

Get one that scans with at least 3600 dpi.

And i will still have my old flatbed scanner for administrative works  Big grin

Can someone still tell me what is the scale of price for these scanners ? it would be nice

thanks a lot

Maybe you would want to buy this months edition (No.15) of the c´t - computer magazine. There you can find a comprehensive report about slide and negative scanners. They are testing (scanner software included) and comparing 7 models plus 1 high quality flatbed scanner as a addtional comparison.

These are the models:
---------------------

Acer ScanWit 27405
Canoscan D2400UF (thats the flatbed scanner)
Canoscan FS4000US
Kodak RFS 3600
Microtek Atrixscan 4000t
Minolta Dimage Scan Elite
Nikon Coolscan IV ED [LS-40 ED]
Nikon Super Coolscan 4000 ED [LS-4000 ED]

I must say a very interesting report/test!

Since you are from Switzerland (your user profile says so) it might be no problem for you to read this (high quality) computer magazine (in german language).

Aaah... Yes of course the magazine is also available in your country.

thanks a lot ! very interessant

I'll try to find it, but i'm not sure of the name "c´t - computer magazine", is the "c´t" a typing error or the real name ?

(euh, just for information, i'm from Switzerland but from the French part, so i better understand english than german  Smile/happy/getting dizzy )

it is the real name!!!

I was afraid that you would be from the french speaking part of Switzerland!  Smile

Well... Maybe you can manage to read it or have somebody translate it for you.

Have a look at http://www.heise.de/ct/

By the way for other interested persons about the scanner report/test ...

c´t magazine for computer technology is availabe in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Belgium, Denmark and Italy.

PS: I am not a employee of Heise Verlag and do not intend to make publicity for the above mentioned magazine. Just think that the scanner report/test might be of interest to some of you.  Big grin  Innocent

Go to http://www.mySimon.com and search for a film scanner and it'll compare prices from other stores. I bought my Minolta Dimage Scan Dual II using it for less then $400 USD. you might wanna check on eBay.com, someone might be selling a film scanner for a good starting price.
