Do You Collect Registrations Or Just Take Photos?

Thu Aug 09, 2001 5:37 pm

This question has probably been asked before but I was just wondering, do you all just take photos or do some of you collect registrations aswell?

I do both

Just photos for me - I note registrations to make id of the image more complete and accurate, but I have no interest in noting anything I'm not photographing. I do however have a kind of vague (and impossible) goal of getting the entire G reg on film - but I don't do anything about this in a systematic way.

Cheers,

The entire G register? Really the entire or just the commercial part of it. What about your current percentage? How much of the register do you already have? Sounds like a lot of work for me

Both, but mainly photos. Started noting regs to have them for photos where they were masked.

I like to just sit at the airport and watch planes. If I feel like it I bring my camera along and take some photos. I only write down registrations to find out who the plane belongs to, if im curious.

I used to take registrations, but many years ago sitting in a car going to an airshow I suddenly thought "what's the point [in collecting registrations]?" It was a very liberating experience to walk around an airshow (or an airport) and just watch and take photos, without having any registrations to collect.

My only interest in the registrations is to identify the aircraft in the picture - and I only write any down if I have a shot where I know the reg. won't be visible (I'm more likely to be sitting at home with a magnifying glass trying to read the last two letters off the front landing gear door to identify the damn thing afterwards!)

The photography is the important thing. Never saw the point in writing things down or ticking things off in a book. That sounds like trainspotting to me...  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Peter - yes the ENTIRE G- register! And, no its not a very practical proposition - I just think it would be amazing if such a collection could exist. Actually, there is now a possibility that one day it will ... have a look at

http://www.srg.caa.co.uk/aircraftregister/ginfo_dbsearch.asp

I haven't submitted anything yet, but intend to do so shortly. I wonder if their acceptance is as tough as A.net?!

I only take photos. I don't trade photos, don't have correspondents, don't buy, don't take note of registrations. My hobby is just taking photos for fun.

I normally don't note any registration of aircraft I only see. Sometimes I note down regs of aircraft I take pictures of just to know which plane I have already shot. This makes it easier! You don't shoot the same reg. all the time and suddenly you have the complete fleet of an airline or of a type of aircraft.
For example Swissair is going to sell the MD-11s soon. I noticed that I had shot all of the 18 aircraft at some time except from 4 regs. So I try to take pictures of the four missing regs. to complete the fleet. Unfortuately I don't have the HB-IWF that crashed either but I think I only have only two left of the SR MD-11s.
When I see a really special plane that I can't take a picture of I note down the reg. for example a great bizjet or something just to find out who the owner is.
Bring it back, bring it back, bring it back

Jwenting - no, the military reg is too unrealistic even for me! I love getting shots when I can, but access issues probably mean I'll not get many unless they turn up at airshows.

I just collect the registrations of the aircraft that I fly on.

Last year when I was out at LAX, I met a retired man up on the hill off of Imperial Hwy. He spends most of his time spotting....writing down the registration number of every aircraft he sees. He had a big spiral notebook that he was writing them down in which he was nearing the end. Each page must have had at least 150-200 regs on each side. I looked in his car and the back seat had numerous of these completed log books piled high. That's a spotter! My last few trips out to LAX I haven't seen him out there...

Very funny Andy! Im happy you had an enlightening experience!

By the way, I haven't seen anyone's selling their 'collection of log books of registrations' on Ebay yet... has anyone?

Cheers to all
