Cool Things You've Seen While Spotting

Sat Oct 13, 2001 5:48 am

Hey,

Sorry about the title, i couldn't think of any other words to describe it!!!

My question is, what sort of odd things have you seen while spotting?

I don't know how rare this is, but when i was spotting at Lulsgate in late July the Fire truck kept coming down to the back of the airfield where i was spotting and started shooting the canons (of water  Big grin).

Here, i even managed to get a picture:

http://www.aircraft.8m.net/Firetruck.jpg

Thanks to Colin K Work for the scans!!!!

The coolest thing.. it was a Hawaiian DC10 landing at MEX, it really was a surprise.. because it´s not a charter flight.. or a regular flight... the thing was that It was comming with two Teams from the NFL The Dallas Cowboys and Raiders because they have a game at the Azteca Stadium.

Among the coolest (except for aircraft) I've seen at airports was Ian Gillan and Ritchie Blackmoore of Deep Purple!

I recall seeing Iron Maiden in the lounge at (I think it was) Belfast City - the serious rock n' roll image was slightly tarnished by the fact they were all quietly sipping Perrier.

I was in the Tower in Calgary...lucky me
when we saw a piper run off of the taxiway. The crash button was pulled and the man jumped out of the plane. YYC was temporarilly closed as about 10 firetrucks raced across the field to find some guy who had a few to many beers and could hold it in...

CLE is boring, with the most exciting thing being a DC-3 and a C-130 on two seperate occasions, and sometimes the Sowthwest Arizona One, but that's it. At PHX, I saw Stedman Graham, Oprah's boyfriend. I'm 6'3", and he's taller than me!! He sat one table down from us at the cafe in our terminal, traveling alone, he had two tacos, which shows that even when you are rich and famous, you can still go places, eat fast food, and not get bombarded with fans.

Don't know if you can classify this as interesting... but :

I witnessed a CP 732 on the roll on takeoff about half-way down the runway, with a WJ 732 touching down behind him on the SAME runway... that's less than 5000ft of seperation...

Rob

A tour inside a DC-3. At Schiphol there is the DDA with 2 DC-3's and a DC-4. While spotting someone approached me asking whether I would like to see the plane from a different angle.

I have been through the hole plane (PH-PBA). I even sat on the captains seat for 20 min or so while the guy explained the cockpit to me.

Spotting at IAH standing directly under the planes on approach a CO MD-82 aborted a landing attempt right over my head and went full throttle about 50-100 feet above me. It got pretty windy and noisy real quick.

At AUS:
C-130
WC-130 (hurricane hunter)
AA retro 737-800 charted to take the president elect to IAD.
C-32A parked on the GA ramp
T-38 AF trainers going nearly straight up after departure.

everything I see at the airport while spotting seems cool to me....I get real mellow watching planes & stuff...
probably watching all the processions of important people for APEC with all the flashing lights running across the apron..

Kai Tak offered something interesting almost every time I visited. Once while at the top floor of the parking building(7th floor?) a thunderstorm rushed in, and then there was a thundering roar overhead, which was a BA744 (heard it through my scanner) doing a go-around. I did'nt see the beast due to the heavy, heavy rain, but it really felt like it was brushing my head, missing some buildings!
Once at GRU I saw an AF 742 come back to land 30 min after take-off, from the opoosite approach end (R27R instead of 09L), and park in a taxiway. A bomb threat apparently.
Once I was disembarking a PAL 733 evening flight when a landing PAL A300 made a HUGE bang. Once out of the plane I saw the airbus at the end of the runway, listing to one side. Blown tire I guess.

When I was at Basel on very hot day in summer the firetruck came along the taxiway and started to water bushes and trees along the airport perimeter with it's cannon. At the beginning he made a mistake and used foam instead of pure water so some bushed were all white for some time.

At Stockholm Arlanda the firebrigade often practice in a "smoke-tower" which often result in a lot of smoke over the trees at the runway. They also practice at Stockholm Bromma airport with their water/foamcannons on a fake aircraft body which they put on fire.

At Bromma I've also seen a firebrigade car putting the pedal to the metal on the runway firing a gun out of the window several times to get rid of birds over the runway. Managed to take a picture of the car with the gun out of the window and with gunsmoke  Smokin cool

Also at Arlanda a SAS aircraft ready for take-off by the runway was delayed because some lady had forgotten her handbag - the marshal throw the bag to the captain hanging out of the cockpitwindow - here is a shot of that:

Talking about celebrities, I was out on Arlanda during a night with the Follow Me and we parked a private jet with Neil Young and his band. They came out of the aircraft with cowboy hats on and guitars in their hands  Big thumbs up

Another interesting thing was the loading of president Putin's limousines - they were loooong - but they managed to load a couple of those into that huge IL-76 anyway. High security then so I couldn't take a shot of the loading, but here is the aircraft:

Haha, remember another funny thing at Bromma. This C172 was landing (guess it was one of the flyingschool aircrafts) and he landed on the undercarriage and kept rolling down the runway without lowering the nose wheel... At first I thought he was trying to impress but then this loud "screeeeaaatch" came when the tail hit the runway. Looked really funny  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

On the open observation deck at Cleveland-Hopkins. (Presumably a thing of the past since 11 Sept). In the distance I was aware of being able to see...nothing. A great gale suddenly sprang up, the 'nothing' got nearer and just in time I realised it was a wall of water. I made it inside and this freak rain sheet drenched the area. It lasted less than 5 minutes.

I've always wondered how Noah felt.

Back in the mid 80s when Air Caledonie (New Caledonia) were flying their sole Caravelle around the Pacific, we caught it at Brisbane International preparing for its early evening departure for Noumea.

The aircraft was in being pushed back and the engines started when all of a sudden, a giant flame shot out from the back of the number 2 engine. Given that it was now dark, the giant flame was an amazing sight!

Nobody was quite sure what happened - maybe not so uncommon for an aircraft of that age? In any case, the aircraft continued to taxi out and later took off.

As we were driving home, we noticed a Caravelle descending toward the airport - must have been due to the engine!

I scored a ramp tour with the airport safety officer in Cairns one weekend. The weather was horrible so I went to hide from the rain under the cover of the Cairns Port Authority building. I was cleaning the lense when I looked into the building to see a man approach the door and open it. I immediately thought, oh no, maybe I shouldnt have ducked into here. He introduced himself and invited me in for tea and coffee (very nice guy indeed). He then asked if I would like to come for a quick trip around the airport. He first took me over to the international apron, where he let me out of the car to walk around the QF 747s and CX A330. I was rather suprised. After that he took me around the RWY over to the general aviation area. It began to rain really heavily then, so we went back across the RWY to the building again. I was a little scared crossing the RWY in that weather since visibility was almost 0 and he careered across at 100km/h. That really made my day. And he promised that I could come back and do it again the next day if I wanted to, since the weather may improve.

What a weekend. Thanks must go to the safety officer involved  Big grin

Like Speedbird244 said, there were always something interesting happening around Kai Tak, but I think this tops everything (almost). Not exactly interesting or cool, but perhaps a bit morbid. Well, here goes..........

New years day, 1997. I was photographing at Kai Tak, on that famous 10th floor balcony at Chun Seen Mei Estate. A China Airlines 744 has just swept past, when my attention was drawn to some unusual movement at the building right across from where I was. Some guy was climbing over the railing of a 7th floor balcony, and before I could react (like pointing my camera at him), he went ahead and jumped off and landed heavily on the ground, seven storeys below!!

I made the call to the police, and they were on the scene within 5 minutes. The news media arrived in six. I read in the following days papers that the guy didn't make it (not surprising).

Incidentally, there were three visiting German spotters there with me, and I bet they'll have plenty of stories to tell after they got home to Germany.

Kai Tak also takes the cake for me. On a some what nasty day in Hong Kong, I was standing on a planter right by the runway fence looking out at a low approaching Polar Air 747F. I noticed the turn was started relatively late. The pilots corrections were not very drastic, nor adequate to compensate for the late execution of the the right turn. As the 747 began to close in on my location the counter action was very dramatic! The nose picked up a bit and the 747 jerked very hard to the right. The jet then past my location, being far to the left of the centerline. The nose pointed right out to the harbor as well. Then again another drastic turn to the left to try and line up. I lost visual with the 747 due to a Cathay 747-400 coming up on taxiway bravo. However I regained visual as the 747 then executed a missed approach! That for sure made my day being so close to the action!

Cheers!

Once at PHX, I saw a cessna and an F/A-18 in line for takeoff, the cessna went first and (of course) flew about 60 knots down the entire 10,000+ foot runway, and the F-18 was sitting at the end of the runway waitng for the cessna to depart further, I was wondering wether the F-18 pilot was imagining blowing that dinky C-152 out of the sky! When the cessna was far enough out, the F-18 went full afterburer 5-10 feet of the deck, and pulled straight up at the end of runway 8! I still wonder what it would have looked like if the F-18 shot a sidewinder or something at the cessna while the hornet was still sitting on the runway.

Not exactly cool, but a bit strange: last Tuesday in the evening a Italian Cessna Citation X bizjet lined up on runway 04-22, started its take-off run, closed the engines after a few hundred metres, left the runway, taxied back to the take-off position and started again.

In November 1996 at my home airport (KCHS) I was waiting with camera in hand at concourse B when an
American Airlines 757 landed to due a medical emergency on board. In April 1995 while spotting at Keflavik, Iceland a Lufthansa 747 did the same thing for the same reason.

I was a crash fire fighter for 23 years and we used to every morning test each truck to see if it was in service for that shift. Either that or if it was the same one it may have been undergoing maintenance of some sort.....anyway neat photo...
