What Is Your Average Number Of Shots?

Thu Oct 18, 2001 5:51 am

Two weeks ago I met Sam Chui during his European spot trip at CDG. Apart to be a very cool guy (Hi Sam if you read me  Smile ), he impressed me by the number of shots that he took in a single day (7 rolls of 36 photos if I remember correctly !). He told me that he would probably go home in Australia (he lives in Sydney) with more than 100 rolls in his bag...
This is why I would like to know if he is really a very prolific spotter or just like the good average of you guys.

So, how many shots do you take on average when you go out for a spotting session ?

Zurich in May I shot 18 rolls over two days.

Heathrow in August with Gary Watt and Paul Dopson I shot 30 rolls in the three days.

I have met Udo Schaefer (bigtime photographer and videographer for JustPlanes video) at PMI and he would shoot 20+ rolls in a few hours...often 36 of one aircraft. He sells them at his shop in DUS and to correspondents around the world. Now that's intense!

Depends on if I'm on vacation and going on a flight I might use 4 rolls while I'm on vacation on planes. If I'm just spotting I might do one roll. When I was in St Louis, I had 3 rolls in two days and I was only there three.

I shoot about 500 frames in an eight hour day at LHR.

But then I'm digital so it doesn't cost me anything!

Usually I shoot a film in one hour at BRU, but then, if there is something really special I have 7-8 photos of one aircraft....

Sometimes I do one film in three-four hours...

Jason, I love your LHR approach shots. What is your digital camera and what kind of memory do you have for taking 500 frames in a row ?

Assuming good conditions, I'll shoot between 5 and 10 rolls per day at a busy airport.

Yann,

It's a Canon D30.

I only have a 160MB CF card but I take the laptop and dump the shots when the card fills up.

I am about the same as Charles with my film usage, although when i used to use digital (back in the old days  Big grin) i shot about 30 frames only!!! that was before the battery ran out, otherwise i could take unlimited (with a laptop in hand  Big grin)

On a good day at LHR, I would easily get through a dozen rolls of film. Now I'm shooting digital, well, let's have a look:

26 August, MAN, 420 shots
29 August, BHX, 154 shots
04 September, MAN, 219 shots
06 September, MAN, 192 shots
08 September, MAN, 102 shots (only there for the afternoon)

I guess it depends on where I am, what's going on, what the weather's like, and how long I stay out. I now have 512MB of memory cards, plus a laptop I can drag out with me, so I'll rarely be limited by the number of frames I can store... (another joy of digital imagery  Smile/happy/getting dizzy)

I'm still an amateur and I don't spend my money only on K64/developing. But here is what I shot on recent visits to the airports:

Toulouse TLS: 4-6 rolls in 4 hours (36 frames)
Boston BOS: 6-8 rolls in 6 hours (parking is expensive!)
EWR: 5 rolls in on a 2 hour layover
Columbus (CMH) 6 rolls in 5 hours

Looks like about a roll an hour. It depends on where I am and what the weather is like!

My biggest "single day" film output was 10 rolls of K64 @ JFK one afternoon... but that pales in comparison to some guys here who I've seen burn up 4-5 rolls easily on just one plane sitting 50mm!
To serious slide traders only rare hot items get that much attention.
Most I've shot on just one plane was 2 rolls.... Palestinian CRJ @ YUL. Which is now history.....

Hmmm... let's see, I shot 10 rolls of 3 aircraft at YXX (Abbotsford) today :

CityBird B737-800 (N- reggie, never delivered, being repainted next week, VERY, VERY rare!) x 6 rolls (36 per roll)
Conair CV580s (hot and new!) : 2 rolls per aircraft (2 aircraft).

But for an AC A340, I'll do 10-12 shots tops... dime-a-dozen.

For me, most common items get a half-roll or a roll... but for taxiing aircraft, then it's not so much how much you shoot, but how much you "can" shoot...
for example, at SEA, I managed a roll on the OZ 777... (I haven't seen a better shot yet)... I wanted to do 5-rolls on her alone, but obviously couldn't. I have a whopping 5 spares left.

I've changed a lot though... I shoot more in a week than I did in all of '97, but that's because I've gone head-over-heels for the 50mm top-knotch KR64 ramp shots... the only thing I like better are touch-down shots at YVR in the winter, nothing beats that, nothing.

Normal SLR -

LGW 30 shots in a full a day
LHR 50 shots in a full day
LTN 24 shots in a full day
STN 50 shots in a full day

Digital

LGW 90 in 3 hours at LGW
DUB 119 in 5 hours at DUB and a flight

So, now I have a digital I shoot a lot more as there are no developing costs!

YKA ,

The CV580s are modified for forest-fire use. They are in full Conair colors, and were painted just this past week. They could very well be from KFA though... don't worry, when I get the shots back, I'll post it. You won't be seeing them at YKA anytime soon though... they're undergoing test-flights at YXX over the winter, and in the summer they'll be used to battle the fires.

My biggest shoot was at LHR with Gary and Dean 3 days and some 1400 odd shots, which i still havent done anything with! Jason and Chris have the monoploy on LHR now  Wink/being sarcastic

Normal couple of hours at LGW would see 200-400 shots taken. I will shoot anything that appeals, yes even the Euro 737 fleet as you never know when your get a good shot thats a keeper. Thats the beauty of digital shoot as much as you want and then trash it without worring about the cost  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

AerLingus it doesnt matter how many you shoot as long as you enjoy what your doing  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

It depends on the camera I am using, the aircraft type and livery, and the weather conditions ... In the past I've needed about 10 rolls of film a day. But I found out that it is too expensive and so I descided to focus on the right place to display an aircraft. Now I am "clean" and only use one to two films on a sunny day.

On a recent visit to Singapore, I met up with Andrew Hunt and Alan Tsui. When a Royal Barge Thai A330 came by, Between the three of us we must have topped 100 frames. I thought it was funny as hell. I could hear both of their film advance motors overheating/wearing down. (I "only" took about 10 frames myself).

Here's one of Andrew's shots that day. He was using BOTH digital and film cameras.

Pardon my severe and utter ignorance but why would anyone want to shoot 216 (36 x 6) shots on one single aircraft at 50mm, no matter how rare it is ?
I shot 8 shots in total on a very rare Air China 744 in Dublin, the most I ever took on any one aircraft just to be sure I got one decent one. I did and I'd post it here as its on the site but Dan (EGGD) would accuse me of plugging the picture Big grin

Anyway back to where I was. I could see one role on any one aircraft max but 6 !! ?? Thats a hell of a lot of money for processing. In Ireland that would cost IR£30 to get developed

Anyone care to explain ?

Cheers,
Martin

Oh and Paul I do love the hobby  Smile. By the way I sent you a mail a while back to see if you came to Dublin after all, even after 11/9. Did you ?

Carlos replies:

Only serious slide traders do that.... for the sole purpose of trading with others like them around the world. There are several well known "slide trader conventions" held every year..... MIA in January, FRA in November and ZHR also has one every year too.. I'm sure there are many others around the world. The EWR show every September also has a good turnout of slide traders. Keep in mind that when I mention these airports I only mean they are held in those cities and not sponsored by the airport authorities themselves.

For serious slide collectors money is not an issue.
As Joe P so often tells us, "Film money is sacred and has no budget"
Here in the US, we can buy a roll of K64 36 exp with prepaid processing mailers for about $10 each.

And just for the record... I don't consider myself a "serious slide collector." But I do have many friends who are. I consider myself semi-sorta-serious when it comes to trading since I mainly just trade with friends.

In Amsterdam (my home airport) about 2 or 2,5 roles a day, now that the observation deck is closed even less. In Rotterdam 1 role. In Dusseldorf 5 or 6. But I rarely get there.

Basically I'm just gearing up for future slide conventions... and I trade a LOT!
Almost one roll alone could go to the traders I currently trade with. I could sell just 15 of these slides, and I would have recovered all costs. It all depends on the rarity of the subject too. I wouldn't go around shooting more than say 10-12 shots on an Air Canada A340... even in 20 years, they're ultra-common.

But for the rarer stuff, a slides' value only increases with time... like a hockey card or baseball card. Imagine trying to get a hold of a perfect ramp shot of a Qantas 707, or Mexicana Comet? If I told you they would go for no less than $50-60US each, tell me why it wouldn't be wise to have boxes of these?

Also, for me, a roll of film is only $13CDN, which is less than $9US.

The one rule of thumb I will always swear by : You can NEVER shoot too much... never!

HAHA Carlos, "semi-sorta-serious"... I like that one  Smile

BWI - I started going frequently to that airport around 1 year ago. Daily I take 4-6 rolls of pictures right there.

When I'm going to Europe, I take 10-15 rolls of pics a day.

Only once I took 2 rolls of film of one aircraft. Last spring at IAD IL-62M Gambia New Millennium Air came. So you can imagine  Smile

My pictures on Airliners.net are very crappy. I have over 1200 but they are from time when I started taking pictures  Big grin I dont upload pics since 1999. I went from manual Canon A-6 to AF Nikon F50d. Quality of my pictures improved very much  Smile
Since 1999 (thats the time when I started taking good pictures) I took over 15.000 pictures.
