Tue Oct 23, 2001 5:09 pm

Just submited these today and I'd like to know which you guys think will get in. Please feel free to comment and give suggestions so that I can use them to improve the photo(s) should they get rejected. Thanks.

1. Great shot! But as Jan has said aircraft is slightly blurred  Sad and if the screeners are picky they would say the horizon is not level!

2. Seems okay but Im guessing your get a "not all the aircraft is visible" warning

3. Nice shot but the aircraft is not sharp, the background is, the Screeners may say the horizon is not level too if you look at the taxyway.

4. Nice shot again, but its the bacground thats in focus  Sad

5. Shot is okay but its the things that are in thw way that spoil this shot, the blurry bits detract from the panel.

Some nice shots well composed but just take a little more time to check before you press the shutter.

Bloody hell i sound like a screener  Wink/being sarcastic

cheers

Funny you guys should mention that the a/c are blurry while the background is sharp as all these were shot well past the infinity mark and the 737 was closer than the others. The original slides are tack-sharp at 2.5x magnification so I suppose the fact that its evening could make the aircraft appear softer. The Falcon 50 shot also kinda sucks due to the lighting and low contrast.

The F28 shot is a gamble since it filled only half the frame on the slide and so I had to crop more than usual hence the rough lettering. Thanks for the comments so far.

At 2,5x you can't tell if it's sharp. You will need a 10x loupe for that.

Also, what do you mean "well past infinity mark" ?
Check the viewfinder for focusing.

Since I have an old SLR, the focusing is done by hand(so is everything else). On the lens that I used, anything past 30 meters in in focus. The focusing screen also confirms this when the crosshairs on it align. Im 98% sure these were all in focus when I derpressed the shutter as the subjects were well passed the 30m mark and the focusing screen reported proper focus. I do agree with you however that shots 1&4 are maybe somewhat soft however I dont think the background is much sharper.

What lens did you use?
The longer the lens, the more critical focusing is needed. Only on wide angles and 50mm could you get away with that trick.(everything outside 30meters..)
On a long lens with aperture 5,6 or worse you will have problems focusing unless you use the matte part of the screen outside the centre of it.

Just a thought...and please don't take this the wrong way...but why not post the images here first when asking for comments, rather than uploading them to the queue (which now stands at some 2500 shots) when you're not completely sure they are good enough?

Given the [still] slow progress on processing this queue post screening doesn't it make sense to all of us to try and limit what we upload to only those shots we are happy with and have some degree of confidence in?

Better that than uploading a lot of borderline shots and then creating yet another "Do any of these have a chance" thread when you've already uploaded them.

Nothing personal you understand as I think this is a fairly common practise...but certainly one we should look to put an end to.

Regards,
Dean
