G-BDXB Going To QKM Today

Tue Oct 30, 2001 8:29 pm

I see most of BA's 747-200 are now at Cardiff and the 'Chelsea Rose" DXK which has been at LGW is positioning there today.

I'm not giving you photographers much notice - I've only just heard myself - but G-BDXB, the only clasic in Chatham colours, is positioning to Kemble this afternoon, arriving around 2 p.m. I haven't been to Kemble for several years but I understand there are vintage aircraft kept there. Will DXB be preserved? (Hopefully in old BOAC colours)

Does anyone know the fate of the other BA classics?

I saw DXB depart LHR in pouring rain (had to throw that in) one afternoon last week. BA titles scrubbed.

The only 747s that have been to Kemble in the past (two former Virgin aircraft) have been cut up for scrap. A former American International DC-8 was also cut up there recently, so I suspect that there's an aircraft scrapper working off the airfield. Unless BA have done a cheap parking deal with Kemble airfield (I suspect that's unlikely) I think the fate of X-ray Bravo is likely to be pots and pans  Sad

This was the fate of a few of the classics that "are" going to ABD:

TF-ADF 747 ex-G-BDXF Jan02 to Saudia
TF-ADI 747 ex-G-BDXI Jan02 to Garuda
TF-ADJ 747 ex-G-BDXJ Jan02 to Garuda
TF-ADK 747 ex-G-BDXK Jan02 to Garuda
TF-ADL 747 ex-G-BDXL Jan02 to Garuda
TF-ADO 747 ex-G-BDXO Jan02 to Biman

These details were before Sept so things may have changed by now.

Cheers

Hmmm... That all sounds like Hadj work Paul. Me thinks if ABD go ahead with that lot, they'll have a lot of tired jumbos kicking about looking for work by next summer!

I saw BDXE and another BA 742 fly into MAN this month with BA titles and union flag tail painted out.

Craigy, I saw DXE land at MAN that day too! DXC was the other and I think they were about 20 minutes apart. My records show that DXC is still at MAN but DXE has joined all the others at CWL. I had visions of a collection building up at the back of cargo - remember all the ex-BA DC-10s?

There was also a DC-10 that day in maintenance, in basic JMC colours but no titles.

BDXB was parked up with BDXO (Paithani) last wednesday around the back of the BA maintennance area-where the concordes have been for the last year.Is BDXO still there? BDXJ was at this time parked next to the road crossing with a couple of 744's and still wearing full colours.

Matt, DXJ and DXO positioned LHR - CWL last Thursday; DXB went on Friday I think. Apart from DXB now at QKM and DXC still at MAN the rest are at CWL. For the record these are DXE / F / G / H / J / K / L / N / O.

Virgin still use 2 at LHR (VSSS / VZZZ) and one at MAN (VCAT) by my reckoning with just one still at LGW to my knowledge (not in service - don't know which one)

Hi, Yorkie,
I photographed DXE on approach and the ex-JMC G-LYON from the viewing park when it was brought out for engine testing. I will get round to uploading them soon, although the BA pic is not too well exposed - the light was not good. When I saw a 747 approaching I assumed it would be an all white PIA and not a BA in the old dark blue scheme.

I am too young to remember the BA DC-10s  Innocent (OK then, I am new to aircraft photog.)
