Expired Film

Tue Nov 06, 2001 6:45 am

Is buying expired film a good idea, if properly stored? I came across a whole bunch of recently expired Kodachrome 25 and was told the film performs better at or near its expiration date, since the consumer version is shipped "unripened" or green. So in that case, wouldn't it be better to purchase Kodachrome at that point, as long as you plan on using it immediately?

If I remember correctly, that was the major difference between the consumer and professional versions of Kodachrome. The pro version was already ripened at optimal color balance, while the consumer version is shipped unripened, which may explain some of the blue/green casting that some get while using this film.

Is this a correct assumption?

I am not really sure, but i think that this kind of film is not bad if used short after it has expired; if the film expired a very long time ago, i would not use it.
