Has Photography Opportunities At ATL Gotten Worse?

Wed Nov 07, 2001 11:36 am

Atlanta is an option for a weekend visit while I'm stuck in Northern Alabama for two weeks. I did a search and did come up with a few places for photgraphy there, but I'm wondering what the status of these spots are after 9/11... Any Atlanta folks out there been shooting lately?

Gregg Stansberry and I take a lot of pics in ATL. Since 9/11 we have been forced to cut way back. We had several places that we have not tried since 9/11 while we let things "cool down". One place that I tried since 9/11 is just off of I 285 on Clark Howell hwy. About a month ago I had a police officer come by. I volunteered by drivers license and work ID and was as friendly as I could be. He looked at the ID's and said it was OK for me to take pics at that location. When the same officer came by a few days later he stopped behind me. When I got out of me vehicle and approached his he recognized me, waved at me and pulled away.  Smile A few days later another officer came by and told me "No picture taking allowed".  Sad I was finished anyway and was packed up and leaving when she showed up. I did not argue with her even though I feel I was doing nothing wrong. I just diffused the situation by complying with her wishes and left. I did not want to ruin it for anyone else.

Although I was not near any "secure area" the planes fly almost overhead when they land. The runway threshold (27L) is about 300 yards away from where I parked. (Just to give you an Idea of the photo angle.) The spot is particularly good when the planes are taking off to the East (9R and 9L). I don't have any photo's on Anet taken from this location because when the data base was in trouble everything I uploaded got "lost". I had three pics that I uploaded that got put into the HQ area and were immediately put in the DB. The rest were lost (approx. 15-20). When you have a dial up connection that connects at 24.4 that can be a little frustrating. So, I will wait until I am sure the DB is ok before uploading again.

I am going to DEN thanksgiving week. Are there any good places still left to take pics from?

Mark,
Unfortunately, it's been pretty bad at ATL. I was run off by a cop from a spot very close to the one Tommy is talking about. They are posted everywhere around ATL. One morning after getting off work I stopped to shoot a DHL 727-100 with winglets and no sooner had I got back in the car than a cop came out of nowhere as I was leaving the parking lot!!!! The only good places for approach shots are by buildings where you will be turned in by people working there!! I wish I had some good news but I don't!!!!

Thanks everyone for you responses! I've always heard that Atlanta was very spotter unfriendly. I guess it's gone from bad to worse, so I will leave ATL out of my weekend plans.

Instead, I'm going to visit the Unclaimed Baggage center in Scottsboro, Alabama...wa hoo!

Mark,
I sent the e-mail saying that depending on when you were going to be here, I could take you to the DL maint. base on the eastern side of ATL. You can shoot all the planes there and if they are using 26L/R all departures taxi right by. It depends on when you were going to be here and my off days. I work 4 ten hour days on midnights on the line giving me 3 off per week(we rotate off days). Right now I have 3 weeks of Tues/Wed/Thurs off but it wouldn't be a problem if we could co-ordinate our schedules.
