Murphy's Law- I Hate It!

Fri Nov 09, 2001 6:46 am

So here is the scoop:

I went to the Elizabeth Ikea with my friend Blaine Iler. We found a nice spot where we could get some good shots of planes after departure from 22R. Now, after an hour of picture taking, I said, "I am really in the mood to see the BA Netherlands." Sure enough, it landed a few minutes later.

I was standing at a fence with the plane taxiing into the frame as the cop showed up. He didn't seem to care, but had to see ID and crap because the people in Ikea were nervous that we might be taking pictures of cars on the highway  Confused or worse yet... planes  Pissed

Of course, then an AA 757 that I was waiting to shoot on departure left, right before the Lufthansa 747-400 landed. Why couldn't he wait just 10 more minutes????

Plus, i have 19 more shots and nothing to photograph now, so I don't know when I will get these developed. They are my first shots of planes in motion and I wanna see how I did.

My current mood:  Pissed  Pissed  Pissed  Pissed  Pissed

I don't think so... but he did check out my high school ID, and take my name, b-day, phone #, and address...

Now I have to find another time to get some shots so I can get them developed!!!!

Staffan,

you haven't even been close, in being exposed to the "Murphy's Law of Airline photography" yet......that's a good start,,,but since you're young, just wait. There was an article in one of the very early 'Airliners' magazines that describes all the nuances of Murphy's Law airliner photography....but one airport is the King of Murphy's Law, and that is LAX. I usually video tape more than I photo jets, but LAX is King of all Airports for something getting in the way. I used to think HNL was, but LAX is tops..!

SJC, actually I can't really remember a time when Murphy's law has hit me during airline photography. But in the kitchen Murphy's law seems to be rule number one, the most recent one was when I took out a nice pizza from the owen, and dropped it, face down...and when I tried to recover it all the cheese and ham was stuck to the floor and I was basically left with a piece of dough and a messy floor...

Worst I've had was in Siberia.
Two Su-15s were scrambling on full burner, but even opening your camerabag there would (will?) get you arrested for spying...
Lots of other aircraft as well.

But the best ones came right with the cop... he was good luck... but I couldn't get the shot!!! And now I gotta find some way to use 19 pics and get the roll developed.

It's one of the features that make me love digital shooting : you don't need to wait the end of the roll to have your shots 'developed' Big grin

Hey guys,
I was there with Jeremy. It's so true that everything came with the officer. I was just in focus for a great shot of a BA 777 with the Netherlands tail when he pulled up. Then as we left we saw the Lufthansa 744. The officer seemed very nice as he seemed to understand that we really aren't terrorists, but teenagers doing what they like to do (contrary to the belief of the IKEA security guards). The officer seemed to talk under his breath because the IKEA security was right behind his car. I think he liked us . All in all, it was a great time until we missed those great shots of the BA 777 and the Lufthansa 744. I had a great time, but I do understand that the IKEA security officers did get a bit nervous, and I respect that. However, I do wish that they could have asked us what we were doing so we could have a chance to tell them that we were just having fun. Oh well...for now we might as well not be involved with aviation photography. When things settle down a bit, we'll go back and have the times of our lives.

Airplanenut and Biler, I see what your situation is like (becasue I have the exact experience like you said a week ago)? But I would like to ask you where did you go in IKEA, is it the cargo container side behind IKEA or the unloading area or the parking lot...The cargo container side seems a nice place with no fence but it's too quiet, not good for me(only one guy)

No, we were in the parking lot right near the main entrance... we got t/o shots... if only they were using the 4s... I guess you have a good idea of where not to be bugged...

My first time at LHR I was really wanting the Iran Air 747SP. My friend and I were taking shots with no problem and Iran Air was due any time. To bad that time happened to be during the famous runway switch at LHR......not a problem for most except they changed runway direction also!!!!!

Dont even try to go by the fence in ORD. I promise you that you will be riding inside a US Customs Chevy Blazer on your way home.
