Fuji S1 And Canon D30 (a Fairer Comparison)

Sat Nov 24, 2001 12:48 pm

The previous thread, whilst interesting, was perhaps not a fair comparison of the two machines, as the S1 photo has been manipulated with auto levels. So I now have three shots with which to compare:

http://www.flightasia.com/bbj_sin.jpg (shot with D30, only resized and sharpened)

http://www.flightasia.com/bbj_sin_s1raw.jpg (shot with S1, only resized and sharpened)

http://www.flightasia.com/bbj_sin2.jpg (shot with S1, resized, sharpened and auto levels applied)

Interesting to see that even when not changing the raw image, there are clear diffrerences in the output from both cameras. Both both are still pleasing.

Opinions?

Ben,

If you don't like it don't read it. By the way, it is not a vs. competition, it is a comparison of two camera bodies.

Is it only me or is the D30 going a little bit on the red side?

I think that this thread is particularly useful to anyone considering buying a digital SLR!

In my experience, the D30 doesn't always get it quite right with the AWB. And when it gets it wrong, it usually sides towards the red. But I'm used to this now - it's no biggie, I just reduce the red a little and kick in a bit of blue in PSP where it is required. Which is maybe 1 shot in 5. But again, that's just to get the colours to my own personal liking.

I have to say Andy, I prefer the raw colours from the S1 to those after you've "auto levelled" them.

In an email to Gary I mentioned to him that whilst his shot "felt" like it had been taken in some tropical location (with a feeling of heat and great early morning light)...your shot felt very cold...more like a sunny winters morning at Gatwick...or similar.

I much prefer the warmth of the raw shots...and having seen both raw versions it really is then very hard to say which I prefer...whereas in the initial comparison I felt very strongly that I preferred the D30 shot. Now it is really too close to call for me.

Nice topic!

Hi all

Maybe I did add some colour...not to sure now. Only way to rectify is if I have a go at the picture again to see what I come up with.

Hi all

I think the BBJ pic has been done to death now so I am leaving it the way it is.

No question for me... Having seen the real airplane not that long ago, the S1 is nearer the mark.

Damn, damn, damn. And I was thinking of buying a D30 next year!  Sad

I just read this thread, but it seem to me on first look that the lighting was quite different in the two shots. Sure, it's the same plane, but since the background is different, the light is at a different angle. What is the deal here? If anyone reads this thread and decided to turn to the S1 based on this, try going to www.dpreview.com and getting a very comprehensive review on both cameras with many test photos. That is where standard conditions are set up to really give a good idea of output. The D30 photo link above looks nothing like the output on my camera unless I have messed with the settings somehow...

Gary,

Email me a raw image of a line up shot that we took together. Perhaps the QF B747SP or some of the stuff we shot on 02R.
