Any Comments On Cameras Going Thru Security?

Mon Dec 03, 2001 12:05 am

Anybody in this forum have any recent experience going thru (USA) security checkpoints with a FULL video/camera bag?
Have two video cams & two cameras, etc...

Will be going on vacation trip and know that to pack/unpack bag to show all contents would take a good 15+ minutes...

And attached to bag is my tripod...any possible problems with that?

Thanks!

I haven't had any problems taking my camera aboard recently.

I just got back from a business trip and had one carry-on with an projector for my laptop in it with a ton of cables and my laptop and another carry on that had my digital camera, batteries, battery charge and cables in that.

For some odd reason, security seems to only want you to take out the laptop and send it through by itself.

Hi

Never went to the USA but on a recent trip to Singapore I had no problems at all.

The only time my bag was checked was on my departure from Singapore and then it was just a brief check.

In mid-October I flew through the US. I got checked by security at Burlington. VT; Washington Dulles; and Orlando MCO. At all points thjey simply took out my camera, took off the lens cap and looked through it to make sure it was indeed a real camera. That was it. On the way down I had no film in it incase that wanted to open it up and have a look. But on the way back up I had a film in it and took photos at both MCO and IAD with absolutely no problems. Both passengers and security let me be and didn't ask what I was going at all.

Flew into/out of JFK in October. No real problems - when my bag went through the x-ray machine at JFK, they wanted to open it and have a look inside, but didn't want to go so far as taking off lens caps or anything. However, I was deliberately travelling light (for me!) with the D30, 3 small lenses, and none of the usual stuff that I would normally take (like the 70-200 F2.8 for example).

In Medford, Oregon (MFR) I was asked to open my backpack so that they could confirm that there was a camera in there. They didn't pick it up or look at it, just seeing it was enough. In San Diego they didn't do anything about it, going through the x-ray was enough for them.

My camera had my Tokina 28-210mm lens attached, and also in the backpack was the Canon 35-80mm lens, and several rolls of Reala and a roll of Kodachrome.

on my recent trip to DFW; TRI-CVG-DFW and back, i simply placed my camera bag on the x-ray belt and sent it on through...nobody even bothered to ask me to take my camera out and see if they could look through it...guess they thought you guys were terrorists  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

They are too busy looking for finger nail clippers to catch the big stuff. This is how the guns and knives have made it through security in MSY and ORD recently. I had more hassles with my camera bag before 9/11 than I have had since. Just this morning in MIA, they were more concerned with the contents of my wallet (which didn't set off the hand wand) and never asked to look at my camera bag which was full of my equipment.

Going on a couple of trips in Nov I went thru IAD-LAX-YVR security and no worries. I even went thru JFK security at the back end of the trip in the UA and DL terminals. They didn't even ask to open up my camera bag or anything. With digital camera and SLR in my bag.
I Don't know where I am anymore

UPDATE:

Security at TPA for Delta gave me a little bit of trouble... they made me remove one of the two videocams from bag and send it thru separately...

Also, they refused to handcheck ANY item..even film in original sealed box...but since it's only 200 speed, it should be ok...I HOPE!!

Will see tomorrow how they do at ATL.
