One More Moochin' Post, ZRH, Perhaps?

Thu Dec 06, 2001 12:24 pm

Alright, i promise this will be the LAST post where i'm mooching a "hook-up" from europe.. (till next year... )

Anyway, as many are aware im busting out to europe next week; i originally wanted to do ZRH, but it didnt seem like there was any way to work it out... now it seems it is the best alternative for me in order to catch flights back home... im a bit happy about that...

anyway, im planning to leave LHR to ZRH the morning of the 17th, and leave ZRH on the 18th... im pretty sure i have a ZRH map saved on my computer, but not 100% sure... If anyone would be willing to drag my bastard ass around ZRH for a day, i would be exceedingly euphoric and grateful, ZRH has been on my "hit" list longer than SXM was....

Since most schedules probably arent that flexible, i totally understand, i would still love if some of you could give me some spotting links, culture tips, various other items, that would help me out tremendously.... and where NOT to go since i'd rather not get mugged, murdered, or brutally teased for my funny american accent...

Feel free to write me too, chris28_17@hotmail.com

Hi Chris

Unfortunately, my schedule doesn't allow me to show you the airport on the mentioned days.

So, a few tips:
- In this time of the year - good weather provided - you can take pictures almost the whole day.

- In the morning, I would either suggest the approach on rwy 14, where you can take pics like this one

- The other possibility is to visit the terrace on the roof of Terminal B.

On both locations, I would say, the light conditions are good until about 11.00 or 12.00

- In the afternoon, you can either go to the heliport (I hope you have either a rented car, or at least a bike). There you can take pics like the following:

- Another good spot is again on the approach, this time on rwy 16 (let's say less than 1 km away from the approach on rwy 14). From there you can take pics like:

- However, if take a walk around the airport, you'll also find spots like the following one:

Sorry, but this kind of weather is limited to a few days per year....  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Hope this helps. If you have any question, you can of course email me. The mail adress is in my profile.

Peter, thanks for mentioning my site.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Hi!
As we have a Rwy. 16/34 here in VIE too, I would say light at 16 is good until 11:00 and on Rwy. 14 earlier.

The approach at Rwy 16 has the advantage - at least in ZRH - that you can take pics in the morning and in the afternoon. And BTW, in the afternoon, you can take from the same spot pics of aircraft landing on either rwy 14 or 16. For example, the Sabena RJ85 pic was taken at about 16.00. This one is landing on rwy 14 (I think so).

Park your car at the public parking and you have just to walk a few hundred meters and you are on the other side of the approach path and the sun somewhere in your back.

Stupid me. I was talking about the position where your first photo was made and about the visitors platform. Shure the afternoon is fine on the other side.

YEP! You can take many good pics from the parking nearby the approach to rwy 14 and 16.

As soon as the weather gets better, I'll be there again. It's a long time, since I have ben taking pics at ZRH ....  Sad

Gerardo>> WOW! great website, sheldon has some ZRH stuff too, that is plenty of good info for me.... really all i will need to know is how to get around without a car and without knowing the local language... (my bi-lingual skills extend only as far as "ich liebe dich", and "ich vermisse dich" and are not gonna get me very far out there!! )

thanks again for everyone's help, this forum is incredible!

Chris

Thanks for the flowers  Smile/happy/getting dizzy.

With a car it is very easy to get to all those mentioned places. From the terminal, count some 3 km to the heliport and some 6 -8 to the approach on rwy 14/16.

If you really plan to visit all those places, drop me an email, and I'll give you further infos.

With the bike, well, there are some km to do  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

As for the "Ich liebe dich": watch out, who you are talking to...  Smile/happy/getting dizzy Smile/happy/getting dizzy

As widebodies have the longer take off run, a 210mm is enough for pics from the observation deck. Perhaps some narrowbodies are too far away for a 210mm.

For a 747 taking off you need about 135mm from the deck or maybe even less.
Bring it back, bring it back, bring it back

Hey Gerardo, i emailed you earlier but i'll post this since i forgot to ask... about the "oberglatt" area, are there any hotels in the area?? im desperate to avoid renting a car, but im very intent on getting to 16 and 14... hopefully there is a shuttle to that general area?? if not, how much do taxi's cost and will i have to call them to pick me back up from that area?

One more question, does anyone happen to know if there is some sort of health club in or around the airport where a person can get like a day pass? (for a shower, etc) most of the US airports i've been to have them, ORD, MIA, etc...

I've spent my morning trying to research the area and i'm coming up with nothing...

you guys are by far my best help... thanks

Hello Chris28_17,

I walked it a few years ago, probably 1997. I mean it isn't that long and at the time it was a plesant walk, all along the runway. I don't think it was a longer than an hour or 1.5 at the very maximum.

If you are relatively fit, I would say try walking it.

Walking? WOW! But yes, I'd say, 1.5 hrs will be enough.

Just one top: FORGET TAXI's!! With this money you really can get a nice bed in a decent hotel....

I'd suggest to take the bus until Oberglatt, and you have to walk about 20-30 minutes.

As for the hotels, sorry I have to pass... Anyone?
