What do you mean with explain the pictures.

Pretty simple, no rocket science.

There was a full/half moon and the airplane was crossing it.

No seriously, this can happen anywhere in the world.
I used to live in Boston and have seen it happen a couple of times. The equipment is certainly a factor, then the weather has to be perfect (clear day), but timing is eveything. You have to be at the right place at the right time.

There are also some high altitude airways......(most internationals departing or arriving the US East Coast will overfly Boston)

Even though my equipment is not as good as Mark's I was able to capture one myself.

Just imagine how this pic would have looked like, if I had taken it with 1200mm instead of 500mm.

Anyway I am sure Mark will read and answer accordingly.

Thanks.
One has to throw a lot of time at this...
Patience and passion.
Oh,
and you have to let the people that think you're nuts and wasting your time not affect you. I have been out at every month's full moon for the last many, many months. Sometimes the air traffic pattern is no good. Sometimes its great and then a cloud or a contrail very high up (from a jet that past many minutes ago) dims the moon. Or the worse feeling yet that happened a couple of weeks ago when the moon was perfectly low and angled full directly in the final approach path to Rwy 27. I was in Winthrop,MA and was getting set up for this Rwy 27 photo which would have been really cool, when all of a sudden BOS tower announced a Rwy change to Rwy33.......... Sad  Sad

Mark,

Why didn't you radio the pilot, (outside of MILT) stay on the ILS approach for Rwy27 in order for me to take another moon shoot....who cares if the wind blows from a different direction.

Vasco

p.s still saving for that 600mm lens and then I will come back to Boston!!!!  Big grin Big grin

Shutter speeds are generally
1/250th of a second due to the really bright moon.

Mathematical odds and focal length. Look hard at the photos and look at the moon next time its full overhead. Then look at all the dark sky around and you will see what I mean. Great photos mind you, but superimposed just the same.

I think you should get a life, and stop saying that one of the best photographers on airliners.net is posting fake pictures.
If you know so much about photography, let's see some of your work...

Frankly, if they were superimposed, I'd be even MORE impressed. Mark, don't mess about mate, tell us how you managed to superimpose the jet blast on shots 4 & 5 over the top of the moon!

The Air India one was on the front page of The Independent a few months ago. It's one of the UK's most respected newspapers so there is no way they would have accepted it if there was any chance of it being a fake.

RE: OK! They Are Like Coke...The Real Thing!

Thu Dec 13, 2001 4:40 pm

ok ok ok I spoke with a friend of mine who owns a photo lab re: Marks photos.
He says they are the real thing. Great shots(I concur)and that it took some patience to get those shots.(my original point as well). He did say "this guy has a lot of time on his hands to catch shots like that". Well that may or may not be true but it does go to my original point as to why I thought the moon shots were perhaps superimposed.
Great photos none the less! As for you Mark, what is the Clipper Highway?  Smile
Clipper Hawaii now falls on his sword err...throtles.
