Moved On At LGW Sunday

Tue Dec 25, 2001 5:27 am

They were jumping on people on the perimeter road by the landing lights. This is the first time I've been hassled here. A shame too, since there was a clear sky background and SKYVIEW isn't exactly brilliant.

I don't think there was a connection with the CDG-MIA nutter as they were turning people away all morning.

This isn't a moan about security, but be warned!

I was under 26. There's normally quite a few people there if the weather's good. A BAA vehicle was patrolling and moving on anyone loitering. I can't say the guy was unpleasant about it, he was just really doing what he'd been instructed. I regard it as a public road, you get lots of private cars and several bus services but I decided not to be awkward.

Is it a public road at the 26 end? I suspect it might not be (unlike the 08 end which is certainly a public road). But if it is a public road, I'd be tempted to tell them to foxtrot oscar. Whatever, its a pity they haven't got anything better to do than [try to] move people on, sad folks that they are.

Hmmm. That isn't strictly a public road - at each end there are signs saying " no vehicles except for access", so I guess it's airport property. Having said this, I know it's a popular place to photograph arrivals on rwy 26. I guess if you went the other side of the trees near the dual carriageway then you would be off the property, and airport security couldn't ask you to leave. It's pretty disappointing that things seem to be going this way though.

I thought you might be interested in this: I was at LHR yesterday (27th Dec.), and shooting by the fence, standing on the crappy yellow plastic stool I use to see over the barriers, when a security guy turned up in his van. "Uh-oh!" thinks I, "he's come to boot me off". In actual fact, it was nothing of the sort - I was by one of the gates where they have a security check tag that they have to swipe as they go round. Anyway, as he wasn't there specifically to get rid of me, I took the opportunity to talk to him to ask what the situation was for spotters/photographers. His answer - "no change". He said as far as he was concerned, as long as I wasn't damaging the fence, climbing the fence or using ladders then it was quite OK to be there taking photographs. He went on to say "we've got more important things to worry about"

Yet again, LHR & LGW seem to be poles apart as far as their security guys are concerned.

Hi all

Security up in ABZ has tightened also.

I can park the car next to the spectators 'bus shelter' and can watch the BAA van pass keeping an eye on things.

A usual quick chat results in a 'not really allowed to park there' A 'not staying long' reply is usually OK.

I always do what they say and move on if asked. I can stay at the fence as long as I like without the car but no way am I paying the parking fee to walk and freeze by b****** off Big grin

Some security guys can go over the top but the majority of them know what we are doing. They are doing there job after all....keeping the British airports safe from the nutters that are going around.

People regularly park up on the grass verge on the opposite (northbound) side of the dual-carriageway (A3044), which is pretty much tolerated - probably as it's well away from the airport fence.

Da Fwog - many thanks

FYI Not surprisingly when President Putin was in town last week, a NIF saw several spotters/photographs moved on from the South side at LHR.

I was at LHR when the President was there even waved at him as he drove past  Wink/being sarcastic I had no problems with security and have some nice shots of the IL96 and IL62 and T154. Maybe the last visit of a 62???

Highlight of the day had to be the lovely old IL78 that came to pick up his limo and Chritsmas shopping Big grin

Cheers

Paul - you're experience just goes to show how ambivalent the BAA security personnel can be!

Have the shots of Il-76 been uploaded?
