Your First Aviation Picture

Fri Dec 28, 2001 1:58 am

My first aviation picture was taken at Munich, Germany. It's my best so far, but I still have to upload it. It's of a Delta Airlines 767 taken right before you enter Terminal C (or whatever that new ground level terminal which looks really nice and has all Lufthansa Europeon flights in it, stationed between Delta and USAirways, you have to take a bus to get to your plane from there. GREAT TERMINAL!) It's a great picture, shows the plane getting loaded up for it's flight back to Atlanta. (I would've got a picture of the 767 going to JFK, but it was behind the USAirways 767 going to PIT. I also would've gotten my first picture to be a United Airlines going to IAD, but it was behind the DL 767! Anyway, it's a great shot, and I can't wait to get it up!

Mine was taken on December 25th, 2001. It was a TWA/AA MD-8?. It was taken at Cleveland Hopkins. I was standing on "The Mound" and very close to the active for landings. It was coming in and about 100 feet off the ground.

My first shot is a TAP A310 on finals for 27R at LHR. It's a really bad cloudy day but you can't usually pick and choose your first shot! Anyway, for a laugh I've just submitted it to try to get it uploaded. I doubt it will make it though  Wink/being sarcastic

ILS:

I don't want to hijack this thread with my equipment details but you don't have an e-mail on your profile.

Canon D30 + Sigma 70-200 f2.8 on that one.

Nope,

The D30 was bought because I needed it for my motor-racing stuff in the summer. One day I figured I might as well go to Heathrow and take the camera with me rather than just watching the planes like I had before. And a new hobby was born!

The D30 had almost paid for itself with the motor racing work it allowed me to do before I even thought about shooting planes.

My very first photo of an airplane was an Ozark Air Lines Fairchild Hiller FH-227B, N4221 shot at my home town airport (Sterling/Rock Falls, Illinois-KSQI) in 1975. That would have been when I was about 8 or 9 years-old. I have the photo but undfortunatley the quality of the shot isnt that great as its an evening shot...If i locate it I shall scan and upload it to airliners.net.

I think my first one was a cockpit shot of Britannia's B767-300 G-OBYG while in flight between Stockholm, Sweden and Natal, Brazil, it was taken with a Canon Ixus Z70.

Don't remember what it was, probably a F-104 or NF-5. I started about 20 years ago at Air Force open days here using a Kodak 110-format camera with black&white film.
Lens poorer than current single-use camera, negatives less than half the size of APS, grain more than double that of current ISO-800 film in a 100.
Might have them somewhere, if they didn't get lost during a move.
I wish I were flying

The first aviation photos, I took them at Zurich Airport on December 6, 1969. A Caravelle of Royal Air Maroc and a Tupolev 124 of OK jet Czechoslovak Airline. They are in the airliners.net database.

My first aviation photo, in June 1995, using a Minolta 500si and Minolta 35-70 lens, one day after I've bought the camera. Location, as usual, sunny Faro in south Portugal, my birth town.

My first aviation picture was on June of 2000. It was of a Continental 737-800 pushing back to Costa rica from Gate 70. It was with a Fuji 1.3 megapixle camera. That picture did not get accepted. It was just simply grainy quality.

Back in the late 80's, UAL 721 (old colors) and a Peidmont/USAir F-28 at MCO. I must have been 7-8 years old at the time?? I still have both photos  Smile

Here's my first aviation picture, April 8, 2000. I was trying out a new camera I bought (I've been into other forms of photography for 20 years) and took pictures of my daughter's soccer game. On the way home, past the airport, I thought I'd finish my film, and knew there were planes visible nearby. This is the first plane I saw that day - an Air Icelandic L1011, with elements of its old Cathay Pacific colors still visible.

Nobody believes me that my first pic was such a rare aircraft - most tend to start with Lufthansa or Swissair or something common. But believe me, it is. lack of experience shows - I shot it at too slow a speed and it's a bit blurry. Would never get accepted nowadays. Since that day I never have managed to catch another Air Icelandic L1011.

Hi all

Haven't scanned it yet but my first picture, I think, was an Air Malta Boeing 720 at Luqa Airport, along with a Dan Air 727 (flight home), Alitalia 727 and Air Malta 707.
