Slide Scanner - HP Photosmart / Reccomendations

Wed Jan 09, 2002 7:57 am

I have noticed that all of my slides come out very fuzzy when I scan them. At first I thought it was a focusing problem, but the slides are very sharp and crisp when I vew them on the projector or with a loupe.

I have a HP Photosmart slide scanner, and I am wondering if the scanner is the problem? Anybody else have trouble with their HP Photosmart scanner?

Any recommendations for a decent slide scanner?

Is it the S20? I usually set the sharpness to 35. After you insert the slide, double click on it and a different screen comes up. The change the sharpness to 35. You can also change the size of the scan.

Hi,
I set the sharpness to 15-20 and use the PSP7 unsharpen mask once. No problems so far.

I set my sharpness to 0 and do all my sharpening in Photoshop. I've never ever used the sharpening in the scanning stage but might give it a try.

I don't know if it's me or the scanner, but when I scan slides that are un-mounted they seem to come out very nice and sharp.

I think Scanner is the problem. I am getting this almsot all the time. It pissed me off but I cant do anyhting about it.
So I dont ever shoot slides. Although they look fine the Scanner like has a disease of some sort and will NOT accept any slide scans. If I am VERY lucky one or two may come out alright.

Use Vuescan or get a new Scannner~!!!!!!!
jk, ya dont need new scanner.

I have just started taken slides now and when I scan them I always go to photoshop. I find that you can get the best results. There is nothing wrong with your scanner.I to have the HP S20 scanner.

There's nothing wrong with your scanner. Try setting the scanning software to 84. That's what I usually do and I get good results, many of which are on a.net.

Old HP S-10 - No Such Features

Fri Jan 11, 2002 7:10 pm

My scanner is the original HP Photosmart, so it doesn't have any of these settings you mention. I think the problem is the scanner; many people that have an original HP Photosmart complain about poor slide scans.

Either I go back to shooting prints or get a new scanner. What do you recommend for a new scanner?

I think we need to know whether you're talking a little blurred or very blurred - if you can read the reg with an unaided eye on the orginal, can you read it on the resulting scan?

If no, then I think we're looking at a problem in the slide loading mechanism. Uneconomical to repair.

On the PhotoSmart, the lens is fixed focus and relies on depth of field to ensure focus. If your slide mounts are abnormally thick or thin, this might cause a problem, likewise would distinct film curvature. You could try scanning the slide upsidedown which might help bring the emulsion into focus - you can then correct in Photoshop or similar.

Cheers,

Never had a problem with the original Photosmart C1500A I believe it was called. All of my slide scans prior to Dec 2001 were done with the C1500A. There is no sharpening setting on the older software and you shouldn't need it anyway. If your original slides are pinsharp and the scanner is operating correctly, you should be getting good results. It's tough for us to tell without seeing an actual example or the orig. slide.

If truly your slide is perfectly sharp, then it would assume it's your scanner. If you're not looking at the slide with a quality 8x (4x min.) loupe then I would suggest going that route first before looking at a new scanner. You'd be surprised how many people i (used to)
trade with say they are sending me pinsharp slides (and they checked with a $2 loupe) and i check it with my 8x and it's soft. A soft slide will come out just that when you scan it...soft.

Whatever you do, you shouldn't go back to prints. If your scanner's on the fritz, consider getting a new one. My new USB S20 works fine.
