Resolution Problems

Sun Jan 20, 2002 4:19 am

Hi,
I'm having problems of getting high resolution scans. Even with a 9000 DPI, they're still of much lower resolution than the prints. I tried to play with other parameters (Sharpening, contrast..). Nothing worked.
Any advise about increasing resolution?

Hisham.

9000 dpi ?!?!?!?!

4000 dpi is typically the top end for slide scanners, and something like 1200 dpi for flatbeds.

Yes the scanner has a 9600 DPI option. But the scan is a low res anyway. The scanner is a Umax Astra 1200S.
I can't upload the pic. But if you're willing to take a look at it, I can email it to you in a 116K jpg format. Send me an email to the address in my profile so I can write back.
Thank you.

That is when the software "makes up" pixels just to make the scan bigger. That would make your scan look "not so good".

Yeah, I see what you're saying. The problem is that even lower PDI's are nor working (200 or 800 DPI). So it could be that the scanner isn't good enough. How do you know the real resolution of a scanner?

It should say Optical resolution somewhere in the manual.

Using any resolution on prints higher than 600 dpi is overkill - as prints themselves are only printed at 300-400dpi anyway.

If the Astra 1200 has an optical resolution of 600 dpi and the print has a res of 400 dpi, then why is the res of the scan much worse than the print?

Thanks for the replies.

Could it be that your scanner has a focus problem?
