Looking For Opinions On A Slide-scanner

Tue Jan 29, 2002 10:12 pm

Hello,

i know this topic has been discussed well enough but anyways; i wonder if someone has experiences with this scanner:
Reflecta Iscan 1800
- 35mm Dia- and Negativ-Scanner
- 19200 x 19200 dpi (1800 Hardware dpi)
- 512 kB Scanbuffer
- USB-Port
you can find additional information @ www.reflecta.de, below the zubehoer topic.
In the shop next to me they sell this one for 390;-DM as a special offer. Is that fair or wouldn´t you consider to buy that one?
I don´t need a high-class device and i am not willing to spend more than 500DM on such a slide-scanner. If someone has a hint on that pls tell me.
Thanks in advance, kind regards
Peter

Peter,

this scanner might not be bad for the beginning, but I am sure it will not meet your requirements after a while. Slide scanner at this costs have two main disadvantages:
  • low resolution (1800 dpi)
  • bad colors

You will have to edit your images a lot if you want them to get accepted at airliners.net. I would look for special offer for a better slide scanner like the Minolta Scan Dual II or the Hewlett-Packard HP S20. Both give excellent images for their price.

by the way: 1200dpi is enough from my point of view...
HP S20 has up to 2400dpi but I can´t see any difference to 1200...

Ivica,

I normally scan at 2200-2800 dpi (depends if the aircraft is full-frame or not) and then resize the photo.
This is a very effctive way to get rid of grain which will be necessary especially when you use cheaper scanners.

P.S.: The difference between a scan at 1200 and 2400 dpi is the far bigger size of the image with more details. It makes no difference when you scan prints, but slides contain more details than prints

This is the same as the Primefilm 1800i. And in England it's called different again. It's not great, but ok to start with. Can be quite frustrating to work with.
