Canon D60 -- Successor To D30?

Wed Jan 30, 2002 12:05 am

As I know that a number of aviation photographers here use the D30 (and even more are longing to buy one) I thought I'd let all of you know that there is some speculation that Canon will shortly introduce the D60 as a replacement for the D30. It is likely to have higher pixel count, better AF etc.

You may want to go to the forums at www.dpreview.com to have a look at what's been discussed there about the D60.

I've seen a few references to this, but it would seem to amount to speculation rather than any fact. What does seem to be a more realistic rumor is the D1S (s for studio) in which the high speed of the D1 will be traded off against a higher pixel count (6mp ?)

The "D60" seems unlikely to me as the suggested spec places it up there alongside the D1/D1S.

It may be the D60 and D1S are really one and the same, in which case I'm sure there must be much life left in the D30 at its price point.

Cheers

There have been rumors flying around for quite sometime now. Not just from Canon but Nikon as well...I have heard from a pretty reputable source that Nikon is going to unveil it's new "prosumer" digital SLR, based on the N80/F80 body next month at the PMA show in Orlando. Fuji is also rumored to have an upgraded version of the S1 that will be unveiled as well...However, since Nikon would not grant them permission to use any of their bodies besides the N60, don't count on it being a Nikon f-mount.

So, I would expect to see the current prosumer SLRs like the S1 and D30 to have a dramatic price drop after the new models are introduced.

Fuji has confirmed is S2, based on the N80/F80 body, with an amazing max resolution of 12 million pixels!!!!!

The D60 is also more or less confirmed.

Where is this D60 "more or less" confirmed? I've been watching this one closely, and all I have found so far are predictions in the various support forums - nothing from any authoritative source. What body will it be based on? Give me a D30 based on the EOS 3 with 4 - 5 megapixels with a conservative speed (3 frames per second) and price it between the current D30 and the D1 - I'll go and buy it tomorrow  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

As it is, I can't afford a D1 - and frankly not interested in 8 frames per second - and am now hestitating on a D30 purchase 'cause of all the rumours.

The rumoured D1S sounds good - D1 spec but with slower frame rate and higher pixel count, but I imagine this would be to pricey for me.

Cheers.

That sounds very interesting for me where I'm very satisfied with my EOS 3 -and want to go digital. I'm thinking of the EOS 1D but if the D60 comes out, I will have to consider whether to buy the D1 or D60...

 Sad

What right now then? Was seriously thinking about getting a D30 prior to my trip to Florida in late February, but now wondering if it could be the biggest own goal on my part and I'd be better to wait and see. Anyone have any concrete info on the D60 or is it just wishful thinking?

I've just spent my luch break trying to track down this mythical D60 - the best I could do was a reported conversation from a dealer who said it would be announced Feb. shipping March.

So still no authorative info (dealers get their rumours off the 'net too you know) and no details, though speculation is that it will be essentially a D30 with upgraded electronics and possibly "pro" autofocus.

Other articles I have read would suggest the current CMOS is about as big as you can go, so don't expect more pixels (unless by interpolation).

Anyway, IF the rumored dates are true, and the situation with the 1D is anything to go by, I wouldn't imagine you could get your hands on one before summer.

Just to add a little spice to the situation, rumours also abound that the D30 will be discontinued, and it is already in short supply - ie., if you want one, run out and buy it now! Wonder where that rumour originated  Smile

Thanks Colin - very informative. There is that big photo show in February so the dates make some sense. And if the D30 is running out, I'm not surprised its not been announced - Canon seem to run out their SLRs before publicly announcing they're finished.

I guess this means the February trip is conventional film then - there's no way I'm buying a D30 only to find it obsolete the moment I get it.
