SEA, DTW, EWR, JFK, AMS, KBP Photography

Thu Mar 28, 2002 1:50 pm

Hello guys!

I am going to be traveling with my family in not to long. I will be at all the airports listed: SEA, DTW, EWR, JFK, AMS and KBP. Unfortuantely I will not be able to spot outside of the airports. How is spotting from the terminals in each of these places?

Thanks, Dmitry.

From Amsterdam, it is excellent but you won't see most of the 'exotics'.
The viewing deck spans about 50% of the concourse. Mostly this means KLM, Transavia, BA and NWA, plus Asian airlines.
Non-KLM/NWA US departures are not visible unless they taxi past on the way to the runway, same for many European airlines.

Thanks! How is security at AMS for spotting inside of the terminals?

Spotting inside terminal C at EWR is an option Dmitry, but you have to be a ticketed passenger to enter it now I believe.

AMS

Inside the Amsterdam terminal you can spot though the windows which are all over the airport. Choose the G-pier if you can, for the optimal sun position. However you tend to have reflections in the windows from the ceiling lights. With a flexible (rubber) sun-cap on your lens you can prevent that.

For EWR, I was at terminal A and you can't get in unless you are a ticketed passenger or you have a disabled passenger coming off a plane. They are very strict in taking pictures there. I asked a national guard and he gave me the bs that it is not aloud. You could go into a restaurant like TGIF and get really good pictures of an America West plane or possibly some American or Continental. The manager let me stand there and take photos.

Inside the terminals at Schiphol you can spot only with a valid boarding pass for a flight leaving that terminal.
It's that way at all European airports that I know of.

Yeah I will be a ticketed passenger for all the airports listed.

Thanks, Dmitry.

OK, but to shoot from the terminal you need a boarding card so check in early if you want to do some indoors spotting.
You can also usually not enter areas your boarding card is not valid for (part of Europe is a free-travel zone, when you have a boarding card for that you cannot enter the rest of the terminal I think, and vice versa).

At JFK go to the Delta Terminal (ticketed passengers only). You can wander around and get some really amazing shots of planes landing and taking off.
SEA is tricky but try to walk around and find a nice place with no ramp lice, but you don't see anything rare since it's mostly Alaska.
Have fun  Big thumbs up

SEA - take the train to the United satellite (I think it's concourse C but was last there in 92

JFK - agreed, Delta by far the best. TWA (nearest International terminal) should be okay too.

EWR - far end of C (gates in the 80s) excellent, A also has possibilities

DTW - I can only vouch for before Northwest moved to the new midfield. Presume the old terminal is still open and you can walk round the whole terminal and down every pier with just the one ticket!

Can anyone answer this? In the US, are tickets now checked to the extent that you have to have a confirmed reservation for an airline at that area? For example could a BA or Virgin ticket give me access to any part of airports such as CLT, SFO, etc etc?

Thanks for the info, I don't think you can get into any airport only the one you will be traveling from! If they catch it, you might be considered a terrorist.  Sad
