Need Advice On Photo Usage For Book.

Thu Apr 18, 2002 5:35 am

Hi everyone,

I'd like your advice on how I should proceed with a request I received via internet for use of some of my photos by an individual preparing a book. I've left out the airline name and that of the person asking for permission to use these photos - here's the letter I received:

I'm a pilot for 'xxx airline' and finishing the writing of a book relating to my carreer. I love your pictures and would like to use of them for the cover of my book. Of course your name would be specified. Would that be possible?

Thanks and Best Regards,"

How should I proceed with this? Should I be asking for money (if so - a fixed amount?)? Of course, I'd love a copy of the book when it's completed..

Thanks for your advice!

I'm always very careful with authors - I don't know exactly what the figures are, but for every book written only a very small fraction get a publisher.

Furthermore, it is seldom that a commercial publication will have the author selecting cover pics - this is a role for the publisher.

It could be of course that this author will be publishing out his own resources, in which case there will be little, if any, money available for buying pics.

I would be inclined to reply along the lines of, "I wish you every success with your book, and would be happy to consider use of my picture for the cover. Please have your publisher contact me to arrange details".

You may of course wish to support this author regardless of financial gain - personally I have tended to donate pics to ex-service authors.

how about letting us see the pic that he wants to use!?  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

a while back i had an author contact me about using of my photos in a book he was writing...all i did was ask him for two signed copies of the book and credit for the photo, and he was very gratified, and i thought that charging him for it might not have been the best way to go about it...and his book is being published, so there's no worry there...

good luck to you, regardless!

Where these requests have concerned aviation (enthusiast) books, I have usually agreed on a copy of the book in return for the pic (plus ensuring it is credited to me). These kinds of books don't make a lot of money, and for many such authors, it's a labour of love (much as my photos are to me; I might sell them here and there, but I'm never going to recoup the money I shell out on getting them in the ifrst place!) rather than a way of earning a crust.

Of course, you might feel differently about it; it's your pic - it's your call.
