First Trip To FRA. Help Please

Mon Apr 29, 2002 5:05 am

Im of on my first trip to FRA in a couple of weeks and would like to have the following information confirmed.

1) I have been told that the main viewing area in now open again, but what time does it open and close. And how much will it cost to enter. Will i be able to log everything on the airport from the viewing area ??? Any tips please. I will not have a car as i will be flying in from London on Buzz,so will only be able to stay in the viewing area.

2) I think im flying in and out of term 1 so can anyone confirm what the views are going to be like inside the terminal. I have a 2 hour check in time so i would realy like to still be able to register whats going on while i wait for my plane. Any tips again please.

Im going to be there on a Tuesday from 10.00 till about 19.30 so if any knows if anything special comes in then please let me know.

Thanks All
Simon

The viewing areas in FRA are great and you can watch almost every movement. It is open from 8.00 am to 8.30 pm. For more information check: http://www.frankfurt-airport.de

For a complete schedule for your day go to:
http://www.flugzeugposter.de/cgi-bin/shop.cgi?flugplan=1&sid=17704

Tuesday is quite interesting with Ukraine International, Albanian Airlines, Lybian Arab...

The possibilities inside the terminal are also quite ok if the windows are clean  Smile

Hi!
even though you don't have a car with you, you might think of the viewing stand in the west of the airport. Go outside the terminal and turn left....there is a road towards "Cargo City" and "Kelsterbach" and there are several bus stops along that road.
Alternatively you can walk there (i did that several times already) not exactly great for the scenery because there will be a noise protection wall to your left enclosing the airport. After about 5 km i think, you will be underneath the 07 arrival/25 departure flight path and a little further there is the viewing stand directly next to the 18. A perfect place for taking photos.

Regarding the Terminals, the viewing area on T2 is not reopened yet, but nothing beats having lunch in the McDonalds in T2 and take a look outside those big windows they have

you might also want to think about taking the bus tour:

hope that helps,

Again thanks for the tip but can anyone confirm the cost to enter the viewing area. I just want to make sure i have the right money rather than wasting valuable time getting change before i can get in.

Also can i get any food while up there. Or will a packed lunch be the order of the day ????

Thanks again

Costs $5DM last time I was there in Oct'00. That might have changed, but it's not outrageous. They had a restuarant/snack bar type of thing at the very end, but I don't think it was for full-meals.

Personally, I prefer the runway 18 obs-platform located half-way down runway 18 on the west side. Excellent for the afternoon, and it's free... BUT, it will be crowded... even on a cloudy day there are 30 people around.

"Costs $5DM last time I was there in Oct'00"

We've got EUR in Germany now, so it certainly has changed!

Have a look at Ivica Ramljak's homepage at http://members.aol.com/ibramljak/ for some excellent information about planespotting in FRA.

You will certainly see a lot of planes from the T1 viewing deck. The price is peanuts, so don't worry about it.

The only problem for photography is that the terminal faces roughly South-South-East, so that the sun is in your face most of the time. You can still take some decently lit shots if you turn around towards the gates though. Also, by this time of year, the sun should be starting to come around the runway axis in the evening, so evening shots can be quite nice.

As far as I remember I paid around DEM 08.00 last year in December, that would make it EUR 4.00 these days.

Viewing deck at 18W, nice but nothing for me, too many people.

Rob nailed it, 30 people on a cloudy day, don't even go there on a sunny day, more like 50-60 people around.
Simply too crowded for me, but then again this is all personal preference....

Most of you mentioned the 18W and the T1&2 viewing deck, what about right at the highway at threshold of 25L and R....not a bad spot either and less walking distance from the terminal.....

Either way, have fun when you get there.
You might want to contact some locals before you get there, Konstantin von Wedelstaedt, Thomas Fischer, Ivica R. all friendly people and if they are around I am sure they will be showing you around.
