Use A Telescope For Contrail Pics?

Fri May 17, 2002 12:46 pm

Hey guys...anyone ever thought about coupling your camera to a telescope to get contrail photos?I was looking through my telescope today at some contrails, and I could easily read "FedEx" on the side of one of the aircraft. Then a light bulb went off in my head. After doing some checking I found a place that makes mounts to connect cameras to telescopes, including most popular digital cameras. The mount I need for my C-2100 is $60.Should I give it a shot?

Thanks
Scott

Ive actually got a telescope and when i was cleaning my camera one day, i thought id try and hook them both together for extra distance but with no joy.
These mounts sound fantastic, i'd certainly get one if i had the chance...

Technically this can be done, though don't expect very high image quality. The biggest problem is how much light will the camera receive? You may find that quite long exposures are required - I doubt it would be practical to pan a camera/telescope combo without introducing camera shake. Worth checking before you buy.
