Dilemma, Teleconverter Or More Memory...

Mon May 20, 2002 7:46 am

Hi!

I have a big problem. I have just about finished paying off my camera, about a months worth of wages to go then its a done deal, just about. Then before I will go on holiday I'll have enough money to make another purchase. Originally this was going to be a new AMD XP CPU, but now i'm thinking along the lines of:

a)256mb CompactFlash memory card OR

b)Olympus B300 Teleconverter (what adapter also?).

The thing is, i'll be on safari, and I only have 200mb or so of storage right now, so i'm worried about how much I will be able to do (of course, I will probably need up to 1000mb just to store the thousands of photos I take on the journey there  Big grin). However, I'm wondering whether we will get close enough to anything to use a 380mm lens, the memory card is only really for this trip as at other times I have a laptop with me... sooo its a matter of priorities.

I really wanted the B300 before, but its... too close to call!

Any help appreciated

Dan

I'm only a beginner but I just got a 1.4x teleconverter for my Olympus C-2100.And let me tell you,it was a waste of money.I'm getting ready to put it on ebay now.The one you are getting might be a much better lense, but as far as what I have,it's useless. When I use the teleconverter along with the zoom of the camera the pictures are dark, blurry and grainy. So whats the point of having it.I'd say go with the extra memory.

Good Luck!

The B-300, by the opinions of others, is the BEST teleconverter out there for the money (£140), 1.7x which would mean I'd have a focal length of about 680-700mm.

I'm back from my German trip last week.
Even with my pocket P&S Sony digicam with an equivalent 35-115mm zoom and a handful of 128 megabit Memory Sticks (some borrowed from workmates for the week).. I would always recommend you go for memory/storage capacity... If something was far away, beyond the scope of the digicam, I snapped it with the SLR (up to 300mm). You've still got an SLR Dan?
Why have a B-300 and unable to take any more shots after the 3rd day?

I'm wondering whether we will get close enough to anything to use a 380mm lens ...That's enough....

Well, I'd be FLYING on some DHC5's, 7's and other nice turboprops, BUT that (flying safari) was sold out by the time we booked it (late April!!!).

The only thing I'm thinking of is ........ well, hold on...

208mb of CF cards, add that to the 200 or so that my Dad has (well, this is unless he gets a new camera and then hopefully he'll get some more also, at the moment he has a broken Minolta dimage EX.. lmao). thats 208 superfine pictures... hmmmmm

Plus I want to go spotting at Mombasa...

I'm stumped folks, I don't even think the extra 256mb will be enough.

Dan, who are you flying on when you go on holiday?

Id go with the memory. You have 370mm or 380mm or sumthing like that on the pro90. although i dont use my 2100 much anymore, I used to find the 380mm more than enough. i doubt youll need anything more than 380mm anyway.

Buy the memory

Hi Dan

Go for the B300 converter.

I was very happy with it when it was attached to my DSC-S70. At full zoom the quality was excellent:
