Nikon D1H

Fri Jul 05, 2002 9:06 am

Does anybody have any experience with the Nikon D1H? A friend of mine who is a wedding photographer is selling off a lot of his equipment and said he would give a good deal on it. From what he tells me the camera is awesome, even better than his D1X at low resolutions. I just wanted to see how well it did for aviation applications, because I don't recall ever seeing anyone use one on here.

Thanks!

I use a D1H...I have no complaints whatsoever about it. It is scary fast, built like a tank and the results are top notch. Don't let the 2.74MP influence you, unless you have the need to make insanely large blowups. Prints up to 13x19 are possible from this camera and even larger when using a program like Genuine Fractals. If you need more than that, well....you need to be in the billboard business.  Smile

Here is a sample of the D1H in action:

Aric -- Thanks, hard to argue with results like those.  Big thumbs up My friend said he would sell me the D1H for $2700. I was just trying to decide whether to go for the D1H or get one of the new prosumer cameras like the S2 or D100. Both cameras are a few hundred bucks less, but I would be sacrificing build quality and speed and honestly, from what I have seen the new generation of digiSLRs don't produce any better image quality than the last; just larger resolutions which for the average shooter is overkill.

Decisions, decisions!

For that money, I'd probably get a sparkling new D100 (and in the US you'd have money to spare towards an AF-S lens to go with it).

The D100 is a cross in built and features between the F80 and F100 with a next-generation CCD. Output quality should be at least equal to the D1h.
The D1h is a beautifull camera, built for pros needing high speed above all. It is effectively the digital equivalent to the F5 (together with the D1x, which provides higher resolution in exchange for some of that speed).
I wish I were flying

Depends what you want to do with it - if you hope to market your pics, the D1h resolution is a bit small for high quality print - this camera was targetted primarily at journalists, and is certainly more than adequate for newsprint. But once resampled to 300dpi, that image is gonna be pretty small, and you're leaving yourself no margin for cropping.

Cheers,
