My C-2100UZ Just Died!

Fri Jul 05, 2002 9:14 am

Hey all
I know a few of you out there use the Olympus C-2100.I was a pretty happy 2100 user too...until mine died today  Sad .I checked the Olympus website and found that the 2100 suffers from "SDS"(sudden death syndrome) and apparently it's fairly common. So I just thought i'd warn you about it.Of course it's the holiday so I can't get a hold of anyone from Olympus to find out what I have to do now.But I imagine it will have to be sent away to get repaired, which according to the forum on their website means I should have it back just in time for Christmas photos  Sad

You know what? The C2100 was my 1st choice. I bought it, and after ONE DAY it suddenly died. They replaced it, but the 2nd one had a bad blue spot in the LCD and that, together with everything else I didn't like, make me fork over the $$$$ for a D30. When I returned it to the store the man said "we see that a lot..."

I said, "if I'm going to do this (go digital) I might as well do it right"

The 2100 was the best I could afford.Funny thing is,before I had it I used a cheap no name point and shoot digital that worked fine for the 2 years I used it.Of course the photos were not that great but it worked. So I pay $500 for a "better" camera that takes "pretty good" photos and after 3 months it died.It will be awhile before I can afford to upgrade to a better camera. But when I do,I seriously doubt that it will be an Olympus product.

Hey, I have a C2100 too.

I am worried if I read this.

So far, after 4 months, still no problems.

Frederic

I thought the D30/60 was one of the most dust resistent D-SLRs?

The camera was working fine yesterday morning. We went to a cookout and my wife took some photos..no problems there. Then the low battery light started flashing so I got the other batteries and put them in.I turned the camera on and the low battery light flashed for a few seconds then the camera went off.I figured that the batteries must not have been charged so I went and bought some new ones.I put them in and the camera would not turn on at all.I tried the adapter when I got home just to be sure and it still would not turn on.Other 2100 users can check out www.Olympus.com and go to the message board to read more about this apparently common problem.

If its such a common problem then they should do something about it, to make sure it does not happen on future models instead of just replacing cameras of people who complain. That doesn't speak too well of Olympus.

My Canon point-and-shoot worked perfectly every time, and my EOS300 did well in the short time I owned it, so I'm not afraid of Canon products.

'Dead' C-2100UZs can often be revived:

1) Remove batteries 2) Leave for about one week to allow
the camera to revert to factory settings. 3) Replace batteries
straight from the charger - REALLY HOT!

Then operate the ON button fully to the right.

This advice came from Olympus support.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Hi,

My Oly-2100 died more or less as well. The dial mode (the rotaing thing to select the programm) was broken when I took the camera out of the camera bag. I did not use force or whatever. The dial mode is attached to the camera body with just a few tiny plastic pins. So be very carefull with this camera, store it in a camera bag without any other things that can touch the Olympus 2100.

best wishes

Sorry to hear about your troubles. However, I was considering a purchase of the 2100, but don't think that will happen now. Have any of you heard of similar problems with the 700series?
