Do You Charge Others For Your Pics?

Fri Jul 12, 2002 10:40 pm

Hello,

I have got a quick question to y'all.
When somebody asks you for permission to use any of your photos, do you charge them for the usage or do you just give them away for free ?
Or if it's printed in a magazine, do you ask for a copy of the magazine ?
Am very interested to hear your comments.

Thanks in advance guys

Let me tell you one thing

If it is a commercial request:
NEVER GIVE OUT YOUR PHOTOS FOR FREE !!!!

ALWAYS CHARGE !!! OR AT LEAST ASK FOR OTHER PERKS

Big companies tend to whine a lot..........

Private request for website usage:
After evaluatin the website, I normally grant usage rights.

Show pride in what you do, photographing airplanes and traveling the world is far from free.........

I am sure Joe P. can tell you a lot of stories....

My rule is if they're going to make money with the help of my photo yes I do charge money and ask for a copy of the final result. If you're dealing with a commercial organization don't let them use your work for free.

If it's just some guy who wants to use the photo for non commercial purpose I let him use for free and ask credit as the photographer.

I am with the previous two statements. Its almost a 'aviation photographers rule' sort of thing, but because of A.net some people tend to not realize that they should charge, and can charge, so quite often if you ask for money, because of the variety they will get someone else who will give them their photo for free.

Thank you so far folks.
So having a photo in a company magazine does not make it "commercial", right ?

Commercially produced magazines should have to pay too, although there's usually not much room for negotiation as they often have standard rates based on the size of the picture or where it is in the magazine (e.g. covers and centre spreads pay more!!!).

For magazines that are not commercially run or are non-profit making - given my aviation interests Propliner is one I contribute to enthusiastically on occasions - it is unlikely you will be paid and the most you are likely to get is a free copy or two.

Company magazines...

If its an airline company, and its an internal magazine, you may not get cash, but tell them you want a free ticket or two - it doesn't cost them anything much to give you a free ticket, they'll find it easier to provide, and you just might get to go somewhere different!

If its an internal magazine and its a non airline company... Well... You'll have to decide whether you want whatever they have, because internal mags usually have a fairly restricted budget.

If its any company and its their glossy magazine for public/external consumption, you should expect to be paid, and you must ask them to pay you (unless its an airline and you want to try the ticket thing again - sometimes you can get more "value" in tickets than in cash payments).

Agree with most of what is said, though I don't make exceptions for internal
publications, training materials etc. - they have a budget for such things - if they don't pay me, it'll only get spent on the Xmas party.

My areas of exception are eductional or charity use and some books - often these are fairly esoteric, limited run affairs, financed by the author. Very few specialised books on aviation turn much profit, so I'm usually willing to accept a credit if the subject is of interest.

Cheers,

If your think its so important and want to charge go ahead. They may well just say no thanks. I only charged for my NCA engine strike / Fire shots.

In September one of my photos will be on the cover of a book about Aviation Psychology !!. I only asked for a copy of the book, the biggest joy for me is seeing your photo on the cover of a book not getting some money.
