Manchester, UK

Mon Jul 15, 2002 4:14 pm

I've seen a lot of the great photos from MAN on here and read some posts about all you people who spot at MAN. Is that the most popular spotting airport in the UK? There was 1 pic uploaded showing the viewing area (park, as you guys call it) and it seemed quite crowded.

When you're this close how do you get the whole plane in the shot without a very wide-angle lens? And I suppose most of you bring a ladder to shoot above the fenceline?

But some people have made comments about the "bad" weather you have there? Is it really that bad? (fog, rain, clouds frequently)?

What is the best time of year to visit Manchester? I would imagine that being so far north you get a good sun angle in the winter for taking photos, right? But I don't see a lot of photos from the winter seasons. How bad does it get in the winter? How far is it from London?

I'm curious about this location after seeing all the great photos.

Hi Bruce
We do get a lot of rain and cloudy days. The best time to visit is during the main holiday charter season July or August. The bulk of my photos on Airliners are at MAN covering all seasons
Cheers

Hello there, I'm from Hong Kong and I shall be going to Manchester for a day with hkg_clk from this forum. We are flying there on BMI on the 29th and wonder if any of you that are familiar with EGCC can assist us in this thread with our queries. http://www.airliners.net/discussions/general_aviation/read.main/877113/

Thanks very much in advanced

Weather is the only problem at Manchester, well the whole of the UK actually. It has some great spots though as you've seen and if you get the weather you can really have a good day.

You can get some very good sun angles in the winter over by the new runway, but as meantioned the weather is usually crap, not really that bad just always cloudy and if you get a sunny day in winter you have been very, very lucky. I'd say best time to visit is between now and the end of August, a lot of charters and a chance of a bit of good weather.

Viewing park is OK but not good for the sun especially in the morning, best spots are over by the new runway, but it is a rural area over there and you'll struggle without a car.

How far from London?
I'd say about 200 miles, maybe slightly more.

Thanks Dan330 for that. It would be great if someone can take us around though!

Bruce, since we are flying there from London, it's only 12.5 GB pounds on BMI one way plus the taxes/security, then you have yourself a deal for a flight.

The Airport pub is also a wicked place to be for aviation photography and spotting. Or just to be there when its warm and sit back and have a pint while waitching the aircraft land or take off after dinner. Id like to meet up with you if you wnated, I go to MAN quite regulaly now Big grin. Just drop me an e-mail sometime.

Yours Sincerely,
