PVD - Not A Friendly Airport :(

Tue Jul 16, 2002 12:14 am

Hi,

I come from time to time to RI to visit my company headquaters. This time I stayed over the weekend so I decided to take some plane pictures. Last Saturday (July 13th) I went to the PVD airport and found a nice spot near the runway with the planes landing. Of course I was outside the fence. Since that was next to the road close to the one of the emergency gates some people was stopping by with their cars and watched the planes landing for some time. I was taking pictures for more than 2 hours. The airport fire engine passed by and after like 5 minutes RI Airport Police car came to me. They asked me (through the fence) for my id so I showed them my Polish driving license. I additionally told them that I came to RI to GTECH (known their) since I work for them. The guy told me "They don't want you to take the pictures of the planes." so I asked him who are "they". "FAA" he says. So I told him that there is no FAA regulations forbidding taking pictures. He was not nice afterwards. He basically told me that he does what he is told to do and I have to stop taking pictures and leave. I still wanted to discuss the issue with him but he didn't want to discuss it by telling me that if I don't leave right now he will call the Warwick police to come over on the other side of the fence to hold me to settle the issue. I said that I am gona leave but I recommend to him check that there is no regulation forbidding taking plane pictures. They followed me in their car when I was walking along the fence to get to my car.

I am cosidering calling Airport Police Chief to talk to him about the issue.

it is unfortunate what has happened since 9/11. If you show interest in airplanes you are suspicious. It is pretty sad.

I just spoke with Chief Carter from RIAP. He was nice and understanding. We talked for a while. The kind of conclusion was that I told him that I don't mind to be checked by his officers but I don't want them to request me to stop taking pictures and leave calling on FAA regulations. I believe he will have his officers familiar with the issue.

My guess is that the foreign drivers license, and you are a foreigner, drew some suspicion. They are more suspicious of young foreign males these days due to Terrorist Cells that operate in more than 50 countries.

I'll bet that if I went there (a typical American guy with normal U.S. drivers license) they might not be as suspicious.

I know its sad....its almost like discrimination against non-Americans.

Sorry Bruce,

this issue with the foreign driver's license is a lot of BS.
I was checked out in Boston in May, I have an American Drivers License, am a white male and look at American as can be.....they only thing I had and that is the reason why the checked me out, a rental car!

Foreign or not, they would have made him leave anyway!!!

As it happens, I have been given a very hard time recently in the New York Area. Ironically most of the problems have occured in public parks and streets - off Airport Grounds and jurisdiction. In those cases, I was allowed to continue my activities - photographing aircraft, but not after considerable hassle and attitude in some cases -despite 100% cooperation on my end. The first time was in Flushing at the park by the Worlds Fair Marina..where I continued. The next time was in Newark NJ -the city. I chose not to continue there because by the time I would be finished getting hassled, it would probably be dark. And now, everyone will sleep safer I am sure, I have been banished pending further review, from Newark parking lot. It really did not matter that I was caucasion, not a teenager, drove a car, had all the correct identification, was an American citizen, have no criminal record so on and so forth. In one instance I had been "observed" by someone, who called the police, who was in all probability *not* a citizen of the USA (and who thought for a moment that I would indulge his private interrogation alongside the authorities).

Its a waste of manpower and law enforcement resources of course, and in *some* instances a violation of one's rights, but its certainly not getting better with the passage of time.

I just got an idea. I will fax to chief Carter the information about airliners.net. I told him about it in our phone conversation but may be it would be beneficiary to familiarize his policemen with the fact the plane spotters exist and this is not a crime.

Hey Jarek-

Sorry to hear about your experience.

I live in Providence and have been spotting (actually only once) and didn't have a problem that one time.

If you head to the Yahoo!groups for "tfgreenairportwarwickripvd" you will find that there is a group of spotters here in RI! The main one who spends lots of time on a perimeter road is Geoff. E-mail me and I can direct you to the website or his e-mail address. He usually has no problems, mainly because he's there a lot!

One last FYI, the Delta N6701 Salt Lake City plane is going to visit PVD on 16JUL (most likely "today", as I am writing this at 12:55am). It'll be there around 11a, I think...but I do know it's visiting.
