Simple Question - Winter Or Summer

Fri Aug 02, 2002 5:51 pm

Hi all

What do you prefer for shooting, Winter or Summer?

I would have to say Winter. I love crisp, frosty mornings with clear skies........and no heat haze  Smile

Anyone else for comments?

Cheers

I have to say that I love winter more than summer, especially of the clear skies and no haze and also the sun not being as high as in summer...

but if it isn't that cold, that would be an advantage. I shot the AN225 when it was -13 degrees celcius...Bitterly cold...brrrrrrrrr

Gary,
I prefer summer at Manchester - the rain is warmer!
Seriously, I will look forward to the crisp clear winter mornings as you say.

Definitely winter. My best day this year was New Year's Day - -8 degrees and absolutely crystal clear. I still have a load of shots from that day that I haven't got round to uploading.

hmm. Winter is cold and wet. Summer is warm and wet... Clear summer days are nice. At least you need no gloves to prevent your hands from freezing like you do on clear winter days.
Winter does have the advantage of giving less chance of heatblur...

Well, here Winter is definitely better than Summer. At least, you get all the ski-chartered 737 that you don't have the rest of the year !

Winter!! Although my nose and feet get frozen from time to time. But the lighting - above all when you have a sunny, cold day and snow everywhere - is simply perfect.

Both have their advantages. But, if I'm properly dressed, I would say winter. The sun stays lower against the horizon, and you get better, oblique lighting all day. In the summer, the sun will be straight up in the middle of the day, giving nasty results. Cold air also tends to be less hazy then hot air, although there are exceptions. On the other hand, days are short, and a particularly interesting plane that you've been waiting a year for and arrives at 5:00 p.m. will be in the dark  Pissed. And after a few hours in sub-zero temperatures, you really start wondering how crazy you have to be to enjoy this hobby.

Lets see, average daily summer temps at SAN run about 75F, wunter temps in the daytime at SAN average about 68F and an average of 9 inches of rain per year. Does it matter? (No hate mail from you!!!) hehehehehehehehehe

"I would have to say Winter. I love crisp, frosty mornings with clear skies"

Which in Aberdeen start about 11 am - admit it Gary, you like winter so you can stay in bed!  Smile

Me, I see merits in both - I remember last New Year's day well Jason - I was at a Popham fly-in, and I think we had as many movements as LHR!

But they put the warbirds away for the winter ... for me nothing beats a sunny field in the heart of England with Spitfires overhead.

However, I would like to put on record an absolute loathing for November. Does this month have any value at all? Let's get rid of it!

Cheers,

Hi All

Colin, you are probably correct in saying that a Winter day in Aberdeen starts at 11.00am  Sad

This shot:

Was taken just after mid-day I think. Hard to really tell but the Sun is just about setting at this time of the day in December.............but I love them.

Now with the new Canon 75-300mm USM IS lens that I got yesterday, hopefully, along with woolly gloves, this will prevent my camera shake.

A bit off topic but a few years ago when it was -15 deg c, after getting a few shots I had to break the icicles off the dog's beard  Smile

He wasn't too happy about that.

Cheers

As most of you, I’d say winter is the best time: Spotless blue sky (although some nice white clouds would add a nice touch to the picture) and an average temperature of 25°C!

Pretty nice conditions to spend some time around the airport. Colours are much warmer than during the hazy summer when it’s easy to get tricked by the high sun, overexposing your pictures.

I addition, I don’t feel like staying outside when the temperature is between 40 and 50°C in the shade and you get burned and totally soaked to the skin in 5 minutes.

Actually, this is probably a REALLY tough question!

Winter's great for the low-angle light, but all it takes is one bloody high-cirrus cloud and you're f*cked for the day of shooting, unless you're after some nice silhouette shots, etc. And with the sun setting here at only 4pm, you miss out on a lot of the great stuff.

Summer's great for the fact that the scheds are generally busier and more interesting, and so long as you shoot in the early morning and late afternoons at aircraft that are parked north/south, I'd say summer's better. Besides, the sun almost never shines here in the winter, and when it does it's damn cold - especially with BRISK winds from the west.

So my answer? I prefer late-summer/early-fall. Sun's already getting much lower, and the sun is up late enough still to shoot most things properly. And at YVR, "high-sun" doesn't really last all that long - September is gorgeous!! Right Joe??!

For me the weather gets better (visually) in the Summer....Plus I do not like my hands frozen for taking pics.....Plus, who can argue with those Joe Pries photos from the semi-nude beach  Smile  Smile

Winter usually gives better light, but I'm glad I have both summer and winter to shoot in...

Yeah, winter for me too!

Imagine to live in a place where winter is just a slightly milder version of summer and vice versa....

Damn, Mark, every time I look at your shots I think of how much farther I have to go to graduate from a second-rate photographer rating. Wonderful!
