D60 For Me!

Sat Aug 03, 2002 3:43 pm

After looking at some of the recent uploads of the last week or so,taken with the D60 I must admit it puts my Sony 707 into another league.

I have over the last 3 months had more fun and enjoyment from this great hobby by going digital that I feel I need to now take the next step and join the "big boys" club.
My questions are
1.Where is the best place in the UK to get a D60 from i.e best price/stock availability.

2.I will need to either sell or px my Sony 707, I have a B300 conv & 16,32,64,128MB sticks what do you think its worth ?

3.I still have my old Canon EOS300 with a 75-300 lens will this lens be OK for use with the D60?

4. What is the best way of telling your wife what you want to do?  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Derek, I was in the exact situation. i have a EOS300 + 75-300mm lens and then i bought a D30. (ok, not a D60 but it still takes darn good pics!) The 75-300 lens will work beautifully.

How to tell your wife? hmmmmmmm.......... not much experience in that area, but maybe try telling her this new camera will make her look like the most beautiful woman on the planet when you take a pic of her?

Derek,

75-300 will be fine with the D60 - trust me, I know!  Wink/being sarcastic

I tried Park Cameras in Burgess Hill in Sussex for my D60. Ordered it on a Tuesday, they said three weeks, and then called me the following Monday saying it had arrived - total six days! They also did a fairly good deal on the camera, grip, two batteries and a 256k compact flash  Big thumbs up When I went to pick it up, they said that the average wait had come down to around a week. Whether this is still true now I know not, as I got mine three weeks ago. A friend bought from letsgodigital which was slightly cheaper, but it took quite a long while to get one.

Can't help with the Sony... Or the wife Big grin Only good thing about the D60 is that it looks sufficiently like any other Canon SLR that you might be able to "disguise" it as a normal SLR is she doesn't understand the singificance of the little "digital" badge on the front!  Nuts

Andy

PS: Don't be coming round East Mids with your new camera - there's already two or three D60 users in the area, and another with a D30 I believe

Personally, for a peice of kit at this price, I would be less concerned with shaving £100 or so off the price than making sure I had quality support if and when things go wrong.

It would be unrealistic to assume that your D60 will be entirely problem free over the next 2 or 3 years. I think a dealer who can deal with servicing/repairs is worth cultivating - if there's a Canon Pro dealer in your area, go there (I use LCE in Southampton) - and be prepared to do a little haggling - most dealers will price match - or offer a deal on batteries or CF cards etc.

As to the wife - I'm lucky, mine pretty much insisted I buy one ... though perhaps 2 months of prepatory moaning and sighing on my part helped!

Cheers,

Colin

You can go the "don't tell the wife its digital" route. But then don't leave a photo magazine sitting in the bathroom, so that when she comes out she says, "Honey, isn't this that new camera you just got? AND HOW MUCH DID YOU PAY FOR IT?????"

I always try the justification approach.
ie:
"Honey.....Well... if I continue to take photos with my normal film SLR, at a cost of $1.00AUD per shot ( slides-film and processing ) then after only... and I mean ONLY 5000 shots, the camera would have paid for itself, and that doesn't include the money coming in from any of the shots I sell. So therefore any shots that I sell is bonus money..... And then you can use the camera as often as you like at NO cost, for happy snaps to send to the family."

There are many ways to justify the purchase of an expensive camera... but never refer to it as a "toy" for taking aircraft photos... it's tool of your trade!!!

cheers

Hi,

I'm thinking of buying a D60 myself. Now, instead of giving me some advice on how to convince the wife, how the h#ll on earth do I have to convince my parents??????????????

Well, the fact is, I would buy it myself with own money of course, but I'm afraid they will say something like 'shouldn't you be saving this money for buying a new car, or when you're going to live on yourself?', something like that...

But hey, what the heck, I'm 24, it's my money, I'm really anxious to get a good camera...So, I'll just ask them for their opinion, and buy it either way  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Apuneger, you're 24, thats the right age to start doing exactly what you want.. ask your parents, try to convince them you are doing the right thing cause you need it. if they see in you all the signs that you really need it they will let you do it with no problem. If they don't, trust me buy it anyway, waiting will only make you do this mistake later Big grin

I'm 27 and I still am not saving my money... PPL is the latest reason why I couldn't travel and visit girlfriend in France for the last 8 months until she finally came...

I'm about to take the plunge too... has anyone had any luck buying the D60 or selling your old equipment on eBay? I haven't spent over $200USD on eBay yet, so I wonder if you've had any experience with it...

Hi Andrew,

I would be extremely wary about buying expensive digital products on Ebay. I tried to buy a D30 second hand here in Australia, and the seller was listed as being from outback Australia, but infact was actually from the US somewhere. After winning the auction, I was asked to send a money order for the dollars, and then the camera was to be sent to me. BUT... As soon as I mentioned using an Escrow service, I never heard from them again. I then contacted Ebay, who apologised for the bad experience.

My recommendation would be to buy one from a reputable dealer, who can give you quality of service and warranty. At least it is peace of mind.

I have used Ebay for plenty of other smaller purchases, without any trouble, and if you are looking for accessories for your camera, then it's a great way to save money.

I have since upgraded to the D60 and love every pixel of it!

Cheers

David Morrell.

For anyone tempted to buy a D30/D60 on e-Bay, hop over to http://www.dpreview.com, go into the Canon SLR forum and do a search for e-bay. You will find that there are a lot of scams around, and more than one or two people have lost money. Be VERY carefuel.

Thanks for your notes of caution. I will go with a reputable dealer. Funny - I haven't even handled one yet...
