A List Of Photo Friendly Airports...

Sun Aug 25, 2002 9:42 pm

Just post the airport(s) NEAR YOU that are Photo-friendly and the ones that ARE NOT Photo-friendly in general. Include SHORT descriptions if possible (ie one or two lines). Please only post information on your local airport as this can maximise the authenticity of the current situation. Updates can also be posted if an authorities stance changes. However if we dont happen to have any locals form say Tokyo Haneda or Beijing for instance then people who were there recently can maybe enlighten us on the situations there. The aim of this maybe is to inform anyone who may be traveling to the destination to have the latest information on the authorities stance on us photographers and also to keep all the individual updates we often get in one post.

Try to keep it in the following format:

Friendly

Dublin Airprort, Ireland (DUB) - No restrictions whatsoever outside the perimeter fence
Weston Aerodrome (General Aviation), Dublin, Ireland - Once you stay within the viewing/picnic area provided then there will be no hassle. The area is really close to the action so there should be no need to stray away from it

I hope idea will be of some use anyway

Cheers,
Martin

Manchester UK

-never had any problems
-lots of good vantage points (if you have a car)
-runway system that is spotter friendly
-north side has the official areas, south side unofficial, just stick to the footpaths.

La Guardia in NYC is very photo-friendly, as long as you don't go to that one area directly behind Runway 4, which is a private area anyway, it's all good.

BRS - never had one problem, even been inside airport grounds and spoken to some employees.

FZO - Never any problems again, but i've heard its not allowed within the airfield (I have reason to believe that is BS as a couple of friends work there and get taken on ramp tours etc.).

etc...

CLT - Charlotte, North Carolina: Reopened observation area overlooking Runway 18R in April. Also there is a small aviation muesum on the other side of the airport with good vantage points as well. Also, you can pull off to the side of the road behind 18R for approach shots. I have done this several times and have not been bothered once.

GVA-no problems and several excellent spots
LHR-ditto and unlike other major airports(CDG etc)its hard to mioss the action
LGW-good too but you need to like walking if the 9s are in use
LTN-1 very good spot for taxiway shots although the 'London Luton Airport' sign is a pain not big prob.

IAH- Probably the photo friendliest major airport in the US.........so far.....There are 2 major observation areas. For touchdown and approach shots the observation area adjacent runway 27 offers unparalleled spotting and photography. The big birds scream right over your head as many of my approach and touchdown pics indicate. If you are more into rotation shots, well IAH has you covered in that area as well. The observation area just off of runway 15R/L on the west side of the field offers some stunning photo opportunities, again check out some of my work. Recently Joe Pries , Ben Wang, Jay Davis and others were here for a convention and during their off time managed to grab a few knockout shots from this area as well. Photography from the car parks of C and A/B is also allowed and can offer some nice views.

A new area that I have been taking advantage as of late is the Marriott Hotel car park. Some of my most recent uploads, namely the 2 shots of the COEX ATRs and the Fedex 'DC-10 'wave' shot were taken from this vantage point. As this is private property I try not to abuse the privilege of using this area for my work and so far have had no problems.

HOU- I am not certain as I have yet to any serious photography out there since 9/11. I'll have to get out there when time permits.

FLL: Not bad at all, If your from out of town rent a pickup not a car and put a ladder in the back. Just keep all ladders 10 feet from the fence. You can also shoot fot the top of the parking garage, But you need 300mm or more. You can shot a 763 at about 280mm.

BWI and DCA are both spotter friendly; however, the caveat is that they are only friendly if the winds are right.

For BWI, if the wind is from the north-ish and runway 33 is in use, you can get great shots from the observation park at the approach of 33 in the afternoon. There is also an indoor observation area in the terminal that is accessible by the general public without a ticket. Views of the runways are ok but you will mostly be looking at the B/C gates (I think).

For DCA, if winds are from the south-ish and runway 19 is in use, you can shoot from Gravely Point in the afternoon. You can also spot from the terminal without a ticket.

At both airports:

- there have been cases of people being questioned and even turned away while spotting inside the terminals... even in the "observation" areas! Does not make sense but it has happened.

- shooting through the glass is possible but not ideal.

- if the winds are from the other directions there are no spots where you can stay comfortably, relax and shoot/spot.

JFK, EWR, and LFGA are all friendly. No problems for me. US Airways windows are usually dirty.

MCO (I go there a lot, I have relatives) Very friendly and no problems. Windows are usually clean. Somebody did recently talk about how his film was taken away before a shot of a Frontier plane.

Phoenix (PHX)
Stay on top of the Terminal 3 parking garage, or just north of the Terminal 2 parking garage - and you'll have no problems whatsoever. Looking forward to the winter 'shooting' season!

This is a great topic!!!

MAD Airport is friendly, altough there are not many spots for pictures, need to go outside airport facilities.

BCN too, no problem outside the fence, you have a lot of different spotting places.
I was very surprised in LGW, what a terrace...without glass, good view... and I took some photos in the rail station, very good view of approaches!

(GRZ) Graz Thalerhof, Austria

There is an observation deck for terminal shots.
And you can be right at the runway (both sides) for approach or
takeoff pics.

CVG has a nice public parking area that over looks the whole airport.

BDL also has public parking right at the end/beginning of 6/24. Also plenty of public parking area on the approach to 24 and 33.

San Diego (SAN/KSAN) A decent viewing area at the approach end of RWY 27, (Corner of Harbor Drive and Laurel St. Across from U.S. Coast Guard Station.) From here you can get decent taxi/hold shots and approach shots. The actual touchdown point is too far to the west to take photos of. No issues with photography unless you are on of the idiots who likes to climb up on the fence. No photography available from inside the terminal itself unless you are a ticketed passenger.

MHT is very good to us spotters. The observation deck has great opportunities if you are interested in shots taxiing in/out.

BOS is horrendous; spotting/photography is not allowed unless you are at the airport for a "reason" (these being flying in/out or picking up/dropping off someone).

Generally speaking, I would say all airport except the ones in the US are "spotter friendly"

You can go to pretty much every European airport w/o getting hassled!

Jeff,

why do you guys still want to hang out at the roof top of parking garage Terminal B. There are so many other interesting spots at KBOS.......

Sydney Airport is pretty good! However its rather humurous to see a few blokes grab their latters and throw them on the ground very quickly so airport security does not see! I never had any problems with security with building and standing high atop my rock pile near the fence!

BUF - The Flying Tiger Restaurant on Aero Road near the airport. Have been there 4 times without any problems

PVD - Commerce Way (off Airport Road) near Runway 23 Left.

BDL - Yes, public parking view area near Runway 06 (off Route 20) as JFKTowerfan said that Runway 24 and 33 are friendly photos but sorry it's not really friendly photos because if the State Police see you there and will kick your butt out.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

My .02cents:

BOS It's an iffy situation. On one hand, there is Jeff's experience. On the other hand, I met someone 2 weeks ago, who has recently moved down to Florida, but was a spotter for a long time in the New England area. He said he and a buddy were on the top of parking garage B for 2 days around July 4th (of all holidays) and never had a problem...he wasn't taking photos, but his buddy was. So in the end, I'm not quite sure what to say.

PVD No problems...like John of BDL said, Commerce Way near rwy 23L...good for the morning, but if you spent time, you'd be able to find other spots for the afternoon.

MAN - Great official areas, no restrictions around the perimiter fence, great vantage points.

LHR - No trouble on most of my visits, although around the perimiter fence seeing people with camera's shooting though the fence looks suspicious (As one police officer told me). But all the best places are away from the perimiter fence.

SZD - uuum, no problems at all, infact, I could swear I could jump over a wooden fence that is 3ft tall, im 6ft 2, and the security staff wouldnt give a damn because there is NOTHING in or out 95% of the time! The security and airport personnel get so bored that there isnt anything in that they decide to come to talk to you nown again!

Yours Sincerely,

For those who want to make the trip.....

ACC - No problems...except interested/curious locals.

OUA - Ditto; One day a guy asked what i was doing and then proceeded to tell me he worked in ATC and would I like a tour.....On the other hand you'd be clever not to pop out your 400mm lens when the gendarme are around  Wink/being sarcastic

Just got back from Perth, Australia and there's a pretty good spot there next to the international terminal, if you walk up to the terminal from the car park, and go to the left hand side of it you should see a small park with picnic tables and a kids playground. When i was there, i stood on the block with the lamp post on it, that way you get some good shots over the fence without a ladder, and some awesome touchdown shots with a 300mm, when the runway in use is the one going from right to left (not fimiliar with the airport so i'm not sure what number it is).

Oh yeah, and the security guards didn't mind at all, just drove past

Cheers,

Jeff.

SLC: Very friendly so far
CLE: Friendly so far
DTW: Not so friendly- police always ask questions, although they usually let you keep shooting
TOL: Not so friendly
HNL: Friendly if ticketed passenger inside terminal- not around perimeter
CVG: Friendly inside and around airport as long as you stay at the parking observation area provided

PHX, absolutely no problems when I spot there, which is quite frequently. I am usually on top of the Terminal 4 or 3 garage (the 2nd to top level, its waaaay too hot to be on the very top) pretty much every weekend. IMHO, the BEST airport for spotting/photography. Just look at the photo stats here. CA and NY are #1 and #2, and #3 is AZ. Almost all of those are from PHX.

I think airliners.net should start a "spotters" section with directions and summaries of each airport's viewing areas. Maybe I should post this in the "site related" forum to get the idea in front of the Admin?

Hey Bruce,
that sounds like a great idea, the one problem i have as an aviation photographer is finding out all the best places to take photos from, which usually involves hours of research. A part of a.net where you could select an airport, and have all the best spotting places would be great!

behind you 110% with that idea mate!

DFW-On one of the airport's access roads in the southeast corner of the airport there is an observation point called "Founders Place". It is only second in my book to Maho Bay when it comes to views for landings as you are about 300 ft. away from the active runway and planes fly right by. Photography is fine, the police could care less (make sure you come to a complete stop while traveling on the access road though! I was ticketed!) One caveat though is that during the summer the winds are from the south nearly 97% of the time (they are usually from the North in the winter), which means that planes will take off to the south, and since DFW has such long runways most planes are way too high to snap a picture of any worth. A plus though, is that M80s, 737s, 100s, and small Airbuses occaisionally use the remote strip on the other side of the access road. They taxi right by Founders Place. Often times you are not much more than 20ft. away from the airplanes wing tip, a truly easy shot. Also there are speakers that blare transmissions betweens the planes and the control tower and vice-versa. It is truly best in the winter time, but is still good in the summer if you can stand the heat!!!!

ATL-Dont even attempt photography here, outside the airport I mean. I once set up shop on back end of the south terminal parking deck. And was told rudely by a rent-a-cop that I was not allowed to take pictures. (?) After talking to nearly everyone at the airport, who had no clue what was going on, I was directed to the deputy of security for Atlanta Airport Police, who tried to tell me that photography of airplanes on airport premises was banned by the TSA!!!! (a lie) Too funny...but kinda sad too...I had thought I had finally found a good place to shoot in ATL.

Bruce--

Its actually kinda funny, I lived there for 5 years, before going off to Dallas for college this year (and my Dad planned a move to Dallas after I had made my college decision  Yeah sure ) But I always had the suckiest spots to shoot there and couldnt find a proper place to shoot. Until one morning, about a month before we moved (April 02) when I drove my dad to ATL at like 5AM, and as I was driving down the road to the terminal, it just kinda clicked...hmmm...parking garage...active runway... I'm glad that you got to take photos there, maybe I changed their ways..lol.

I've never had a problem at IAH or DFW. I agree with the ATL post; most of their rent-a-cops (and real cops for that matter too) are just plain rude.

Cardiff (CWL) - No problems at all, although you do get watched!
Bristol (BRS) - Walked straight across the tarmac taking pics, not a problem ... also at the side of the building i took some pics without being approached.
East Midlands (EMA) - Again, walked straight out onto tarmac taking pics without a problem
Malaga (AGP) - Another straight out onto tarmac taking pics, i even strayed from the queue and walked around the plane abit...
Cyprus (LCA) - No problems, on the bus, across the tarmac, outside and up the steps taking pics, lovely! Big grin
