Fuji S2 Vs Nikon D100

Fri Sep 27, 2002 4:16 pm

Hello guys!

I am looking ahead and would like to know the comparisons between the S2 and D100.

I have seen plenty of S2 pictures here, but I don't think I have seen one descent D100 pic.

I beleive Nikon had a problem with the D100 at first, what was that, and is it fixed?

Which one of the camera will produce better images, and why? I know the D60 is tested and proved to be an awesome camera, but I am a Nikon guy with Nikon gear. I would like to know which of the 2 cameras will meet the D60 image quality or even better? I have seen some fantastic D60 images, but not and S2 or D100 images to stand next to the D60.

Let hear all you comments, and this thread is not to end up in the "hole" a lot have been lately.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I really wonder what Nikon are doing - we have the S2 in direct competition to the D100, based on a Nikon body which appears to take better pictures, and now we have the new 14mp CMOS Kodak, again a Nikon body (F100 it would appear) which looks set to blow all existing Nikon DSLRs out of the water ... and may also give the new Canon 1Ds a run for it's money.

As far as I can see, the D100 is a bit of a dead duck - released too late (it really needed to be out before the D60 so comparisons would be with the D30) and already looking obsolete. Also no sign yet of a replacement for the D1/D1x - are Nikon going to bow out of the DSLR market and instead licence camera technology to Fuji/Kodak etc.? - could be a shrewd move.

Cheers,

Colin

Dmitry,

This may be the decent D100 pic you are after

I agree that the D100 was marketed very badly and may be discontinued well before its competitors. The S2 looks the way to go for the people with Nikon glass.

Craig.

Thanks guys!

Wietse, is that a D100 image, or S2?

Colin, what does that F100 body and the Kodak deal cost?

D,

The Kodak (DCS-14n) Colin mentioned has a list price of $4000.

Dimitry - funny you should say that - a friend of mine has used Nikon for years - he's really tempted by the Kodak, but finds it hard to accept sporting a "kodak" badge on his camera!

But don't forget, Kodak have been at the forefront of digital photography for some time now - they produced "digitised" version of the Canon EOS 1 and Nikon F5, as well as a series of "backs" for medium format cameras. Don't dismiss them out of hand - they are top flight in digitising, and by using the F100 as the basis for the camera have a very strong looking package.

Cheers,

Colin

I found some 1Ds samples at Canon Japan

http://www.canon.co.jp/Imaging/EOS1DS/

Haven't seen any proper Kodak samples yet - but watch dpreview for these. Also in dpreview are samples from the "dark horse" foveon Sigma SD9 - very good quality - definitely a contender for the serious amateur market, but reliance on Sigma glass would be a concern for some.

Cheers,

Colin
