Poll: Nikon D100 Or Canon D60

Mon Sep 30, 2002 7:02 pm

Hello...

I'm looking for a new D-SLR. I have seen pictures here on A.net with both, and I like them. Or maybe a Fuji?
Please tell me why you bought YOUR (either Canon/Nikon/Fuhi) camera. And tell me if it has something, you hate.

Regards,

Kenneth

RE: Poll: Nikon D100 Or Canon D60

I've just bought a Canon D60, and I must say I'm impressed by the amazing quality (in comparison to my old Canon AE-1 that is).

6 months ago, I started doing some research for a new and digital camera. As many other, I had 3 choices in the end: Canon D60, Nikon D100 or Fuji S2.

Why did I choose the D60? First of all, I like Canon more than the two others. Second, I read in a bunch of reviews that the D60 was superior to the other two (more lenses available, more settings,...). Third, because I think it is easier to use and I find this camera prettier.

I've just uploaded my first shots to the screening department. Let's hope they are as amazed as I am  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Why did I buy a D60? Simple, I had a huge investment in Canon lenses which I had no desire to replace. I've had it two months and I think its great. I made the investment vowing that I'd still shoot slides too, but in reality I've shot hardly any slides and have not felt the desire to do so either. D60 is good enough for prints well above any size I want on a regular basis.

The D60 goes to sleep after a few minutes, and takes several seconds to wake up again if you let it go to sleep. You can switch off the sleep function but it then uses more battery (which is rechargeable so its not necessarily a cost problem). However, I haven't disabled the sleep. If I forget its gone to sleep and try to use it immediately, I loose the shot. Only "compromise" I don't like.

Well I am one of the few descenter. Nikon all the way. But since the D100 isn't as great of a deal of the Fuji S2, go with the Fuji.

I am in the same boat as Andy. I have had the D60 for a week now and just got back from an air photo-ing weekend at CLT in North Carolina. I have to say I am VERY pleased with the results. I have a few photos in the upload process now waiting to be screened, including a 'pan' shot of a US 737 which I am real happy with.

And I also dislike the sleep feature, I almost missed a few shots with it yesterday, but its something to get used to.

My vote goes to the D60!

D60 fan all the way - sleep function is a pig, and totally unnecessary as battery life is superb - I've disabled sleep with a custom function and I've yet to run out of battery life (my energy runs out more quickly).

Only flaw - I don't have a 2nd D60 body!

Like Andy, an investment in Canon lenses was a major factor in going with the D60, but I see no reason to have gone with anything else - CMOS does seem to deliver superior image quality, a view which now appears to have been endorsed by Kodak.

Cheers,

Hi.

So far :

Canon - 4
Nikon - 0
Fuji - 1

Canon is doing strong !! Is there not any D100 users out there? I saw a picture the other day, which looked nice. Let me hear your opinion.

D60 here also. No regrets at all, the only thing I dislike is the price...

I guess it all comes down what kind of setup you have.

If you have neither Canon nor Nikon glas, well that is a tough decision.

I myself have used Nikon for a long time and wanted to buy the D100.
The more I read and hear about it, the more I tell myself to wait.......or go with the S2......

Have not made up my mind yet!

I'll add my name to the D60 list too, and I'm sure Craig M will vouch for his as well.

The only problem I find is, that I now want to spend more money on lenses and other equipment to become totally self sufficient when shooting on extended periods away from home. ie: a week or so, in the outback of Aust. ( no cables or modems there!! )

Vasco, make the right descision, because I am watching and I will buy a digi sometime in the future, and don't know which one is better, haven't seen hardly and D60 images produced by the D100 or S2. Hope to see those on either body, and then make my choice!

D60 for me too! Compatibility with existing equipment was a factor, and a number of reviews ranked it above the D100 and S2, although I must admit that the differences are not that great.

D60 vote here. My decision was also based upon pre existing Canon lenses, and years of shooting with an AE-1. The quality is great and the auto off functionis just something to get used to.

A lifetime spent using Canon equipment means D60 for me also.

D60 for me too. I glad that I bought this camera. Now I can take hundreds of photos without paying for film.

Do you have any lenses?

If you have some of them, the wiser choice is to keep with the same system (Canon or Nikon), as I think both cameras are on the same division.

If you have to start buying lenses visit http://www.dpreview.com , http://www.steves-digicams.com where you'll be able to see complete reviews and compare any D-SLR model. If your doubts are among the D100 and S2 go to http://www.bythom.com/s2d100.htm

Don't let yourself be fooled by minor concerns on some features on the models or by stuck-on-this-brand users and analyze everything: as you can see, both D100 and D60 posters here are happy with them.

I bought a D100 about three months ago and since then, I haven't loaded a single roll of slide on my beloved but chemical F100.

Count me in with the D60 lovers - bought one about 6 weeks ago and it had its first real trial in Sydney and Auckland during the last two weeks. I was apprehensive that things might not come out as expected but the 490 shots I took are nothing short of fantastic (in my view) - look out for a selection on A.net in the comings weeks !!!!! The 100-400mm Canon IS lens helps I know, but the clarity and exposure of 90% are spot on. I had a few problems at the 100mm end with a/c with large areas of white on them (Qantas in particular) which seems to have fooled the autofocus a little but generally all the shots are sharp and well exposed. Still experimenting though with single point and multi-point focussing so that may have been a contributor.
The battery life is superb - 250+ shots on one charge. Agree the shutdown after 1 min can be annoying but you get used to it.
I too however had a huge investment in Canon lenses which swayed me towards Canon when deciding on which way to go.
The one downside with digital is the time required for file renaming, resizing, sharpening etc that you have to do when you shoot a lot in one go. There are plenty of upsides though - free to shoot multi frames at no extra cost, once you buy the CF cards you can use them over and over again at no extra cost, you can see the results immediately, long term image storage without degridation, 500+ images to one CD so saves space compared to slides - I could go on and on.

On the auto shut down, set it to 4 minutes or 8 minutes or even turn the whole function off....Its all on the operation menu....

A nice little add on is the battery grip along with an extra battery. Absolutely no worry of running out of power!  Smile

Fuji S2...In every review or comparison I have seen between the S2, D60, and D100, the S2 always wins in terms of image quality/detail. Granted, the S2 just like any other prosumer SLR has its flaws, but ultimately, image quality is the determining factor whenever I buy a new body. But, if you currently own a number of Canon lenses, it certainly would not be worth the $$$ to switch to Nikon glass...The D60 is just as capable of producing superb photos as the S2. I just like the color palette and overall output better on the S2, just my opinion. It is also no surprise that the D60 is getting the majority of the votes on here, considering a vast majority of a.net shooters use Canon products (us Nikon boys are in the minority, oh well).  Smile

Its just apples and oranges, all three will give great results and even with this innovative, new digital technology, it is still the photographer that counts the most.

I think one of the previous posts told it best... go with the system you are already using. If you are not currently using either Nikon or Canon determine which entire system would work for your needs the best. I have taken nature and landscape for years and Nikon (to me) holds a little advantage in that area and dictated my choice for the D100.

For me it wasn't a choice of Canon or Nikon, it WAS the D100, but all that said, it is one of the most fantastic camera bodies I have used. Since buying this one I have yet to use my F100 or N90s, which I really liked as well.
