Too Arty? What Do You Think?

Sat Oct 05, 2002 8:15 pm

It's been said before and no doubt will be said again, but strange isn't it how some of your favorite shots get rejected?

Take this shot for example:

Too arty? Ahh well.... I like it and that's the main thing!

By the way, this isn't a dig at the screeners, just an observation.

I like it! What is that little air scoop on the leading edge of the tail?

Hi Rez

I like the image also but a little soft with some JPEG compression.

We all have to follow Johan's guidelines for image uploads and this may be a little too 'artsy' for him.

My conclusions in the past is that advertising/magazines/airlines like this sort of stuff as opposed to side on shots.

Again ,we have to abide by the rules and if it get's rejected, so be it.

Carry on shooting  Smile

Cheers

Great Photo but.....

I think what got this photo rejected was that the complete letter "A" is not visible, and the red/orange/yellow stripe trails off because the rudder is to the left.

Reason for rejection..... BADRUDDER!!

Please have pilot center rudder before next photo attempt. Big grin Big grin Big grin Big grin Big grin Big grin Big grin Big grin Big grin Big grin Big grin Big grin  Big thumbs up

if you look around the edges you can see the JPEG compression... other than that, not bad, looks like a pretty sweet tour you got.

I think its stunning, and if its too arty at this site, take it somewhere else, and you never know you may get an offer from the media to use it.

Thanks for the responses folks, your comments are all much appreciated!

As mentioned in a previous post I am plagued by grainy photos! The reason for the little bit of JPG compression around the edges is the use of a package called Neat Image. I'm still toying with the demo / evaluation version but when used sparingly it can IMHO produce some fantastic results.

Can anyone suggest an alternative site for posting where it may get picked up by the media? Don't get me wrong I'd love for it to have appeared here as I believe A.Net to be the ultimate repository for aviation images and associated information, but like Gary says, those are the rules and we have to abide by them... Which I can understand!

I think I'll just fire up PS7 again and see about removing the compression artifacts.....

Cheers

The problem with these sort of shots is that it is that they really do draw attention to sheer technique and composition - there is no margin for error.

The jpg compression has been mentioned, also the slight softness towards the right hand border - I think this sort of image needs to be pin sharp to work. Finally, in an arty shot like this, you need to consider the whole image edge to edge, not just the main subject - a tighter crop, removing most of the sky would have given the shot even more impact.

While in a "standard" aircraft pic, there is I think some margin for error (ramp lice, if not too intrusive, stuff in the background etc.) the arty shot is very unforgiving.
