What Is Wrong With These?

Sun Oct 06, 2002 3:28 am

Hey all,
Seems most of my stuff just got rejected. I haven't uploaded for a few months since I was away in the summer, and previous to that I was getting very few rejections, now, almost all of my uploads got rejected. Anyways I was wondering what I was doing wrong because this is pretty much the best my skills with paintshop will get these photos. Is there something I should be doing in the editing process to make these better?

I scan with a Dimage Scan Dual II off my negatives, using their easyscan utility, scanning in at the highest resolution with no auto corrections. Then I load em up in Paintshop, crop it, resize, unsharp mask then done.... am I missing something here?

Thanks very much

Jeremy

PS, let's try to hear some constructive advice/criticism instead of just "i like your shots" or "i don't like your shots" CHEERS

jeremy,

The Dimage Scan dual II is infamous for its negative capability. It just does not seem to scan them properly, and that is what you are seeing here as well.

If you want to continue on the film route, go for slides. They are better quality, better tonality and they scan better!

Good luck,

That 737-700 shot is better than the 3 in the db. And the -700's are gonners so I wonder how come it was rejected?

Is it just me or does the first shot look like the aircraft is in front of a big photo culiss (sp) like in old movies?!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Like Wietse said, try slides. Provia is good.

Hi Jeremy,

nice shots.

Yeah I too have heard things about the Minolta performing not as well on negatives but superbly on Slides such as Fuji and Kodachromes.

I use the HP S20 scanner and that is the opposite. It scans excellent on negatives but like shit on slides BOTH Fuji and Kodachrome.
That is the reason why I shoot prints.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I have yet to start scanning slides again once I get my roll of K25 back..
Dammit It has been nearly 3 months!!! What the hell is going on with their NJ lab?!
1 month ago I got it back undeveloped, so I sent it away once again..
Now its over a month and Absolutely zip all on this..

BAH!! This is gay ass!

Hey guys, thanks so far, just one thing, I'm quite happy with negatives! I have been shooting airliners for a few years now, all on negatives, and I have absolutely no intention to switch to slides... BTW, the Dimage scans my negatives fine, can you see anything in specific in those shots that is a cause of the dimage scanning negs wrong? I need some tips on how to enhance my skills rather than if I should switch to slides. Cheers

Do you get prints printed too? or just the negatives?

About the question in your last post, Do you see the way the image is all blotchy and not vibrant and sharp? That is the Minolta's lack of working with negatives....

Why not try a roll of slidefilm like Sensia or something, try it out and see what you like most.

Wietse, I'm not going to switch to slides, I'm very happy with negatives and I see no benefit for me to switch.

Anyone else with some advice? It would be well appreciated.

Jeremy,

While in PhotoShop, try adjusting the White Point Curves. I tried it on the first photo, used the wing root as the "white point" and the photo changed quite a bit. Use the "fade curves" function if it is too white. You can also set the grey curve as well. Sometimes you need to look at things other then resize, crop, and USM. The "levels" and "curves" should not be over looked.

Give them a try. Good Luck!

BO - quite the opposite for me. The S20 screws up my prints/negs...leaving that nice purple/pink horizontal line. I've calibrated it and cleaned it so many times, no luck. Slides are the only thing that seem to scan ok (from time to time they look like crap, but somehow I fix it).

Jeremy - The quality looks low for some reason. I know you had a bunch of your GIG stuff accepted a few months back (tried to look at them, but the site is running slow). Wonder how much of a difference there is...I'm guessing you scanned them the same way, right?
