To The Screener With No Heart.....

Tue Oct 15, 2002 5:58 am

This has to be one of the most personally offensive rejections I have ever had come my way. I uploaded this shot as it was the last I took on the 13th October before I was called to rush to hospital to witness the birth of our first child. It sat in the HQ queue for 2 days (no prob with that and I sincerely thank those who viewed it as HQ) and is rejected for bad common.

Have a look at these shots added from Sydney over the last 2 weeks or so:-

http://www.airliners.net/search/photo.search?id=281508,281340,280781,274174

Now isn't Wunala already common?

I have re-uploaded the shot and I hope someone can find it in their hearts to add the shot. I've given up adding shots of the "Special Three" planes but this one just had far too much meaning to me so I decided to upload it. And the comment clearly noted this. I assure you that there will be no more Special coloured QF aircraft uploaded at this end ever again.

It is disheartening given that in the last week I've seen more Australian "baddoubles" than ever before. I guess I got the wrong end of the stick.

For those with any interest here is the shot in question.

http://airliners.net/procphotos/rejphoto.main?filename=ojc_qf063_130ct02.jpg

Again, my thanks to those who saw the shot as HQ, I appreciate your letting this one shot past.

Kind Regards,
One upset a.net user

Don't I understand your post, or is there a mistake?

The shot I see there is the F1 Qantas, VH-OJC, and you are talking about Wunala (VH-OJB).

BTW, 'screener with no heart', please. Couldn't you find a better topic? Do you ask from us now that we give you descent advices etc etc about your picture?

Don't forget this: uploading is still for fun. I always try to help someone if he asks how to improve his pictures, but this...

Frederic

Well Craig, with all respect for you, your wife and your baby and comments aside, it's the image that counts.

Everybody has special moments, we should not mix personal situations with Airliners.net.

that's only my opinion and I also get upset with my rejections

Heeyy,

Congratulations Craig on your first child. I still have to wait at least 200 years before I am ready to have my first wee-one! Big grin
Or I can allow my damm teenage hormones and testerone levels to conquer me and my horny desires with the wild assortment of 90% hot chicks at my school high. I know I'll be getting good grades soon!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Anyways, that shot is indeed nice. Shame there wasnt any sun that time.
I also get quite a bit of badcommons/baddoubles and sometimes it does get to a point where it starts to piss me off.
Like: if I went down to SYD and hammered a nice shot of F1, or Wunala and to get a reject for that reason, I'd feel bad that I couldnt show MY Pictures of these planes to the audience.

However, Keep it flowin Craig, you still got tons of drool worthy stuff down under which millions of a.net users want to see.

Oh By the way, do you have a name for your newly born daughter?

Cheeers!

Craig,

To be honest, I think its slightly soft. I hope therefore, before you reupload it, you try to improve it a bit. Please see the following topic:

kids are rad.

Almost the only time I don't get hassled when snapping planes is when my 4 1/2 year old daughter Chloe is with me.

Congratulations.

Not getting pics accepted here will be the least of your concerns for the next 18 years or so Big grin

Congrats on the new addition to the family!

Regarding the shot - while nicely composed, it's a common aircraft shot under dull conditions. While the timing may be important to you, it isn't to everyone else. Sorry, but that's the way the world turns.

Again, nice shot, but we've seen MUCH better from you. I'd forget it and move on if I were you...

anyway, to the screeners defense i've been given the impression they dont really read through the comments on the pics, so dont take it personally.

Hi Craig

Congrats for the new kid (to Anna too!)

But these days I think it is a bit weird? to see which shots get accepted or rejected, I have one Wunala shot in your quoted link, to be honest I was quite suprised, because it wasn't that top from my standard but I got on anyway, luckily.

Here I thought my VH-OJC upload 10 days ago that may get on:

http://airliners.net/procphotos/rejphoto.main?filename=SYDVHOJC34LClimb.jpg

But it got rejected same reason as yours, well may be is not fair, but I feel sorry about your rejections. On the other hand, I think you also have quite a fair bit of OJB, OJC in the DB, can I say this if ok with you? I decided I am not going to upload any more those Qantas special plane because it is getting too hard and common topic unless I have a reason to. I have no idea how the other Wunala shots get on, I am a bit surprised that photoid 281508 and 281340 get on, may be they have better scan, to me your shot (OJC but different topic to OJB) are better their wunalas in a indirect comparision. Thats just my standard of judging I don't want to cause any upsets of course.

But I think any creative shots enough will still get on with less pain.

Craig,

Congrats on the birth. You're going to have a great time raising a kid, mine is nearly four and the joy he brings to me everyday is immeasurable.

Regarding this thread, in the interests of transparency, let me explain the reasoning behind the rejection.

1) Your photo was initially HQ'd be one of the screeners, but with comments. Something along the lines of "not sure about this, wouldn't this be better as a forum thread to announce a birth" Then after that, it was put on 2nd opinion by a few more screeners asking similars questions, mentioning the fact that "apart from the comment, the shot was nothing special" "it is a badcommon" and the like.

2) As mentioned in this thread, plenty of people get rejections for badcommon. Normally this would happen when you submit a marginal shot, especially if it is a sky shot (i.e. sky for background). The comment is meant to enhance the description of the photo. At a push, it could also be used to announce say, 500th upload of photos, as this is aviation, site or photo related. But to be honest, your photo was judged on the photo, not on the somewhat unrelated comment. We have to be fair and apply the badcommon rule also fairly. And from what I am reading, other forum members also agree with the rejection.

So based on the fact that (1) It was HQ'd with reservations and (2) We judge a photo on its photographic merits, it was rejected.

So I hope that you understand the reason for the rejection. I am sorry that you feel it was "one of the most personally offensive rejections" you have ever had, it was not meant that way. But with what has been said above, I am sure that now you understand why.

First of all, congratulations to your daughter, Craig!! You will have many more special times with her, not to forget your first spotting days with her.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

To be honest, the picture itself - without the comment - is somewhat a bodercase. The bad weather and a little bit of "softness" are the first negative points I see. But nevertheless, there are pics recently added with the same grey background and the same softness.

Just a personal opinion: Airliners.net's success is based on the submissions of the different photographers. A little bit of "heart" - as you say - and the upload of this pic into the database wouldn't definitely do any harm to Airliners.net, but give something back to on the top photographers on this website.

Craig,

Congratulations on the new arrival. As others have said...1. you'll be too busy by far for the next 18 years to worry much about rejections here...and 2. she'll bring you untold joy and happiness - I know my two little angels do  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

So...why not print this shot and frame it, date it and dedicate it to your little girl. You have the shot you promised yourself, your wife and daughter and no angst over what anyone else thinks. That's what I'd do.

I have to agree with others that ultimately it is image quality that counts and not sentiment. Rejections are soon forgotten - you'll remember that day forever!

Best wishes,
Dean

We all get shots rejected for badcommon sometimes, you've got nearly every aircraft that has come into Sydney, so I don't think you should complain too much about it.

Many congratulations on the new-born! Look forward to seeing the family one day!

Don't worry - you're not alone! We're all being treated the same way by the screeners. A very sad situation.

Hope all is well with you downunder!

Craig,

She's a beauty. She's gonna grow up fast. The first year or so will be slow - kinda crawl. Then, she'll start walkin' and talkin' and she'll need you. Enjoy the time with her as much as you can. You only have one life to live with her. I have two sons - 18 and 13 years old. Time goes way too fast. I used to say "whoever invented time - invented plenty of it." I don't believe it now. Enjoy every moment. Time is much more precious than success or money - believe me - I've been there...
